He said it was like running into a brick wall.

What was Marg rumoured to have had in his wraps anyway?

Plaster of paris wouldn't do ****.

This seems to be Clottey's exact intention. He said he was going to pressure Cotto and leave him no breathing room. I can envision Cotto punching himself out from trying to fight Clottey off of himself. But he'll be banking rounds while doing so. Hense I believe Clottey will lose a decision as he probably won't come close to knocking Cotto out or down even late in the fight, when both are tired.

margarito's punches began to hurt cotto from the fifth round onwards. in the first five rounds margo's plastered hands had not taken full affect and in these rounds cotto was boxing margarito perfectly. after five rounds the plaster began to harden and that is when margarito was able to hurt him.

noone can say that margarito always beats cotto because the first five rounds show that cotto would beat margo anyday. i'm not a margarito hater, i predicted he would beat cotto, i just never thought he would cheat to do it.

Clottey by the way was having his way with Margo for a good half of their fight.
His problem is that he goes from tight to sloppy as the fight progresses. This is also why I believe his plan of pressuring Cotto will fail him in the long run.

If Cotto clinches when needed, he destroys hands de plaster with no problem :deal

Most realistic prediction, Rudolph. I also can see Clottey getting in between Cotto's large shoulders and closing his shell wile he connects inside. Cotto will try to let'em go the way they close the distance, that is snapping left jabs and counter rights with scoring effects only... Unlike you, I don't see Cotto backpedalling as much but clinching at some point... All in all, Cotto will win rounds and use the same tactics he used against pressuring opponents in the past - Lovemore NDou, Shane Mosley - backing away and losing the last two rounds. Cotto by UD if Clottey doesn't get cut seriously before that stage.

If Margarito was wearing wraps for the first Cotto fight - and there is no way to know for certain that he was, but I feel he was - and STILL win as many rounds as he did, Margarito has NO CHANCE. **** STYLES. Do you understand the difference those wraps can make? It depends, but hardened wraps on the knuckles of the pressure fighter HUGELY magnifies that pressure. It affects the opponent's offence, defence and, obviously, punch resistance.

I can't believe people need this explained to them.

As the plaster hardened (it's a good assumption Margcheat used loaded gloves) after 5 rounds, Cotto at the same time was already tired from evading the constantly advancing Margcheat... Cotto bouncing too much around the ring and got tired... Cotto has no choice but to engaged Margcheat in close range... Then comes the point where he can't take it anymore and decided to take a knee... twice...

I believe he said that Margo didn't hit particularly hard, and I tend to agree with this. I don't remember any single shot that Margo landed rocking Cotto. Although Cotto's chin has improved significantly since moving to welterweight, he has still been rocked badly. Mosley caught him with a right hand right behind the ear which stiffened Cotto's legs and Judah hit him with a monster of a straight left in the second round of their fight which had Cotto in a world of trouble.

At no point in the Margo fight did Cotto appear to be on shaky legs following a single shot. This suggests to me that Margo doesn't hit anything like Judah or Mosely. The key to Margo beating Cotto was simple punch accumulation - he took his heart, and possibly plaster wraps... who knows??

As much as I hate to agree with Joel Judah, he summed it up best when he said to Zab "you gotta hit this ****er". Seems like an obvious thing to say with it being boxing, but he was right. If Judah, or Mosely could have upped their punch output, with the power in their punches, they could have ko'd Cotto.

Speaking of cuts, I wouldn't rule one out, as accidental headbutts seem to be the norm in Clottey's fights. I am yet to see Clottey cut or bleeding, so if I were a Cotto fan I'd worry about my boy getting stopped on cuts. First one opened by a headbutt and then worsened by punches, forcing the ref to wave it off.

i'll try to get a video and other web sources where he says fatigue was much of the factor and stating margarito was the better man that night. classy guy even where handwraps will always be ??? and the only thing he regrets not sending anyone in his camp to check handwraps as stated espn.com. cotto laid the blueprint and mosley show us how to easily beat margarito by perfecting it.
