What's WBA official excuse for accepting Holyfield as a challenger?

Holyfield is not rated in the top-15 by WBA, therefore, according to its own rules, this fight couldn't happen and shouldn't be sanctioned. We perfectly know sanctioning bodies don't give a darn about rules, but I don't think they are trying to act as if nothing happened, I'm sure Gilberto Mendoza has released an official statement or something like that....anybody knows?

It happens all the time during voluntary defenses(to fight unranked fighters) especially as Valuev is not the real champ.

They released a statement following the announcement, "Dawww (sic)...he's just so cute!"

Holyfield is a former WBA champ. The rules state that former champs are acceptable as a defense.

  7. Good question?:patsch the WBA should stand for WE BE ASSHOLES:verysad Holyfield deserves a title shot about as much as Mccain deserves a rematch against Barack ObamA:-( when was the last time Holy beat a top 10 contender:huh a long time ago, if little 213lb Ibragimov easily beat Holy well over a year ago, than Valuev a hundred lbs heavier will brutalize holy before knocking him out..

They're counting it as a voluntary.

Which basically allows you to fight virtually anyone you like, but usually the sanctioning body will protest if you pick anyone too inferior.

Anyone remember the WBO stripping Ray Mercer of their title to fight Larry Holmes in 1992? Look how that one turned out...

Shame for Holyfield today that he isn't a patch on Holmes '92...

I'm not questioning your post, it's just that these rules are pathetic.

Oh, I see...now it's clear. :good I just asked because last time I checked even in a volountary defense you had to face someone in the top 15 if memory serves me right.

shamefully, it's DK and a bit of cash. that Holy said "i'd do it for free" raises my suspicions enough.

When will Valuev fight the Klitchkos fer krissakes?

these fights are such a disgrace to boxing.
pac DLH..ok - just barely, but ok. but this? i really thought it was a joke the first time i read of it.

All the ABC bodies are bad by BY FAR out of the 4, the WBA is the worst!

Valuev is a joke of a champion and Holy is a joke choice for a challenger.

I think this has more to do with a certain promoter than it does with the WBA. Boxing corruption and politics at it's finest folks!
