It was a shitty gameplan. He fought on the outskirts of the ring and exerted way too much energy circling the entire ring. Like when PW was most effective against Margo, Cotto should have painted an invisible square inside the center of the ring and never left it. Use his speed and skill, counter, and move in the small square. He fought the dumbest gameplan he possibly could have done against a bull who would never relent.

Margo took Cotto's best shots when he was at his freshest and strongest in rounds 1-4 and shrugged them off, after that Cotto was mincemeat.

A broken nose is part of boxing - you think he went in there thinking "Okay, as long as I don't get my nose busted I'll win"?

I don't think so. It's part and parcel of the game, and it didn't suddenly make him tire and lose power - the omnipresent force that is Margarito is what did that to him :yep

You think Margo can't break his nose again in a rematch? He better work on a contingency plan just in case :hey

cotto is sound technically but he's not a mover.

and thatøs a big, big difference to the point i think you're trying to make.

cotto's also a "bull who will never relent", but i think he's a great example of a world class fighter who can't adapt to someone who carries more weight than him.

this might sound too one-dimensional to some people, but its a great skill in itself to do what margarito and cotto do - and it really is too easy to judge waht yoiu can see from the sidelines.

    :rofl

Replace the word 'will' with 'can't' in your above statements and you're on the right track :good

I've suggested this in other threads, agreed 100% :good

I honestly think Cotto's defense is much better than Tito's, this not meaning his defense is great in any way.

Yes we do. As far as the fight that already happened though.
A rematch could be a whole different story. Could be the same, could be different. I repeat that Cotto can fix his gameplan and adapt, something that will give him a better chance if a rematch occured.

i think coto's initial defence is better than tito's too.

but when cotto's in big trouble he's no idea what to do. that'øs the troubling thing about him and that won't change if he fights margarito again.

he's too use to being able to pound his way out of trouble.

Interesting point, but I remember he held pretty well in the Torres fight, when he was in big trouble but managed to get out of it without pounding.

    thats my point.

cotto tried to ht his way out of the torres fight and when that failed he had no idea about defence.

if that fight had been stopped in the second would you have complained?

Truth is I didn't complain the fight continued ;)
And eventually Cotto managed to not get knocked out in that round, and come back later for the win.
Generally, I like it when refs give fighters some extra time before stopping a fight.

    [/edit]
But yeah, when in trouble he doesn't think of defense, he automatically gets into something like survival mode.

It wasn' a part of the plant but it was predicted, specifically by Bert Sugar. There was an interview with him where he was asked about his prediction and he picked Margarito by TKO in the 8 based on one thing and that turned out to be major, Cotto tends to kneel with his head down A LOT in all of his fights, that's something he always did and is used to it and Margarito's best punch is the uppercut and that's what caused Cotto to bleed heavily from the nose.

On point, that's how Cotto usually fights, I would like to see him hold and not give Margarito a chance to throw and land at will whenever Margarito is positioning his self to do so, I don't know if Cotto will manage to do that but he ought to make some changes or he's going to get beat again. Also I would like to see more attempts to throw and land body shots and try not to go to avoid going to the ropes as much as he can, he can do it if he wants to counter as he did the first time but without standing still with his head down when Margarito prepares to fire back.

This won't be easy and this might be even more difficult than the first fight for time, he needs activity/stamina and a little bit of movement if he wants to beat Margarito, body shots to slow him down should be thrown or at least attempted even if Margarito isn't allowing him to.

I agree on all points (improve his stamina, try to box in the center of the ring and avoid the ropes, not kneel with his head down) except for the body shots. I think that would be too risky for him, he would leave himself more open.
I believe Cotto himself said after the fight that the body shots just weren't there.

His team also said that Margarito wasn't allowing Cotto throw his body shots freely as he usually did that's why they went for the head. Think it's also more a case of Cotto seeing Margarito's face right there for him that he was also suckered in landing there over and over.

He needs to make some changes, what he did the first time obviously doesn't and WON'T work. If he goes kneeling down to the ropes again he will get hise nose busted and it will slowly turn out to be a copy of the first fight. He needs to make some changes and apply them from start to finish.

You've got to be kidding me?

You sound like a frustrated Cotto fan.

Everytime Cotto has been rocked and hurt, he's always kept his cool and not panicked.....all of a sudden when he was attacking and gotten wobbled, he did whatever he had to do to re-cooperate, and then used his legs to lateral around the ring until the cobwebs cleared......this sounds to me like a fighter who has an idea and vision on how to go about getting himself out of trouble.

not necessarily more running but more holding.....

    dont think mayweather but hopkins....

cotto is capable of winning if he follows a the right gameplan, this is fact.....
