I'm amazed at the number of posters here who rip on, undervalue, and basically declare Ali as an overrated fighter. WTF? I must have missed it when it became universally acccepted in the boxing community that Ali wasn't a top P4P guy, as well as the greatest heavyweight. And better yet if you defend Ali or point out his greatness you are treated like a idiot or a brand new fan. I could sit here all day and point at resumes, matchups, skill comparisions etc.... But instead I prefer to leave it at this... Boxing had a great 2007, HOWEVER it is still not anywhere near the forefront of the national sports scene. One thing boxing has an advantage over other sports in the U.S (excluding baseball-MAYBE) is its HISTORY. And Ali is to boxing what Babe Ruth is to baseball, if you want an ambassador to a sport, a guy to point at and say "Thats why boxing was and still is the greatest sport on earth" look no further than Ali..... P.S Thank God half you ****ers weren't around when James Braddock won the title or a feel good moment for the nation would have turned into, " He's a bum!! He's ducking Louis!, The heavyweights suck! Who cares about them!?, Dempsey KO Braddock 1 :deal , etc,etc,etc.... Main point: Haters who only think the guys you currently nuthug are worthy of our praise and respect..... GO **** YOURSELVES!:fire
Well he was abit of a ****, wasn't he. People say PBF is bad but Ali was on a whole nother scale, he dissed Frazier so much (even after beating him) Fraziers kids were picked on at school. People only have grown to him after he got parkinsons or pretend to have warmed to him. If he wasn't struck down with his disease alot of people wouldn't proclaim him as so great. (in terms of personality)
I think people bag on him because even casual fight fans say, "Ali was the greatest". It makes you sound more knowledgeable if you say "Henry Armstrong, or SRR" or some other old-school fighter. I still think he was the greatest, though. Been a boxing fan for many years and he was the man.
Boxing fans who have a deeper knowledge than the casual fan see it as typical and a cop out to simply assume Ali was "The Greatest". He was a great, great fighter, that is not getting doubted, but to rank him P4P no1 all time to me, and any other keen boxing fan appears to be naive and ignorant to the rest of the boxing world. i rank Ali as 1 of the p4p elite, but SRR P4P no1
Womanizing is true, but at least he mended his ways after making that mistake. Same thing for the racism charge -- he left the Nation of Islam and he no longer thinks of white people as 'the devil'. And overrating is natural when you transcend the sport itself and become an icon. He may not be as amazing as most believe, but he was one of the all time greats of boxing, and that can't really be denied by anyone except the most biased haters.
No Ali is not P4P number 1 in my book either, I would rate Armstrong in that spot, but I've seen posts saying Floyd is EASILY higher on the P4P all time list.... an this wasn't one of the 14 year old Floyd nuthugger posters either.
a couple of counterpoints 1. hes a 3 time world champion, beat every major heavyweight in what is regarded as the "golden era" for heavyweights.... If anything his accomplishments in the ring is very underrated. 2. What does Ali's "womanizing" and being a "racist" have anything to do with boxing?
Well Ali saw himself as the greatest heavy champion ever... and he really is entitled to that, he may have been. But there are interviews and tapes where he clearly states this, "I may be the Greatest Heavy weight of all time, but P4P...P4P Sugar Ray Robinson is the Greatest Fighter of all time."
Basically, it's revisionist history. That type of thing is fashionable and it always make the guy doing the revising look smarter than everyone else (teomporarily).
I think we can all agree that it would be very much a stretch to declare Ali P4P number 1, with Armstrong and SRR in the way. I also would rate his contemporary, Duran higher. Doesn't make Ali any less amazing of a fighter however.
