What's worse? To be knocked out by a single punch, or to lose a decision?

For me, it has to be losing a decision. And the higher the weight class, the worse the difference gets.

Anybody can walk into one huge punch and get stopped.

But to get outpointed means that the other man was better than you over the full distance.

To get stopped, you only need to lose a couple of seconds of the fight. And a knockout punch can certainly come from a fluke shot as well.

But to get outpointed, it's not a matter of a single mistake or a single piece of good fortune for your opponent. It means that you fought for 12 rounds and you lost the majority of them. In short, it means that your opponent was better than you. That may not be the case with a sudden KO.

A steady beatdown leading to a stoppage is a different story, obviously. I'm talking about a sudden, one punch knockout.

I expect hardly anyone to agree with me. **** it, there's a poll. Discuss.

Honestly, I'd rather lose on points.

You may have a fringe group of fans slowly rewrite history making it closer than it was. Who knows? In thirty years, you were robbed!

And losing by flash ko makes you overrated and a glass chinned joke.

I would have an easier time telling myself "He landed a lucky shot, that's all, doesn't make him a better fighter" than trying to convince myself that his winning a comfortable decision doesn't make him better than me.

The worst is taking a beating for many rounds and then getting KOed. Think of Tito against B-Hop. :thumbsup

I would rather take a beating and lose on points.

Put it down to lack of motivation/partying/prostitutes.

Losing by knockout is the worst thing possible in boxing.

If you are KO'd you can still win the event!

    Amen.

That's what Angelo Dundee always said and I've always thought the same.

Losing by KO is generally worse.
Going the distance is important. If you're still throwing punches back when the final bell signals the end of the fight that's a damn sight better than lying on your back with the referee counting "10" over you.

Sure, some decisions are so one-sided, such bad beatings that they are as bad as getting KO'd.
Like Lacy against Calzaghe, for example.
But most clear-cut decisions are not horrible beatings like that. And to lose "9 out of 12" rounds doesn't even mean you were outclassed, they may not be badly lost rounds. It's a hell of a lot better to lose your rounds because the other guy just outworked you a bit than to lose the whole fight because you couldn't take his punch !
To lose a round is to get the 9 points instead of the 10. Doesn't really compare with getting rendered senseless or horizontal in front of the whole world from a single punch.

Surely a one punch KO is worse.

It depends, it would suck if you know that your opponent has the tremendes right hand or crippling Lead hook and you do so good to neutralise it and win every single round, but then at the last round just get KTFO....

I think psychologically it must be worse to be comprehensively outboxed.

KO's happen when one fighter gets the upper hand momentarily - decisions are unquestionably proof that one fighter is superior to the other overall
