Clottey was coming off a very close split decision win over Cotto. Cotto and Margarito were considered the top guys in the welterweight division before their fight and considered the guys that Floyd Mayweather was retiring to avoid. Mosley beat Margarito ranking him back up among the top welters. At the time the top guys were considered to be Mosley, Mayweather, Margo, Clottey and Cotto. Berto was a secondary thought and incidental belt holder. Now everybody wants to bang on about Berto because he's the only one left. Well guess what, Berto would come up short in a fight with Manny Pacquiao.
Because by choosing to fight Shane Mosley to clean up the 147lb division is like finding an old raisin and tossing it out. JMM and Berto would have been harder rooms to clean up. Floyd would be like cleaning up a large mansion. I hope you guys get the analogy.
I don't remember seeing Clottey's hand get raised when they announced the winner. Of course Berto will come up short. But I guarantee you he would do better than Mosley at this point in time.
Both JMM at 140 and Berto at 147 are risky fights, based on the "I've seen your last two fights" formula. So, Pac is fighting Mosley. If Manny is cleaning out the division why is there still a notable belt holder in the division? Unifying the belts is also a major part cleaning up the division. With Berto, beating up WW's and knocking out fighters like Hernandez, who is not elite but can take a shot (and was nearly 160 in the fight), with one shot (around the guard), they don't know what could happen in that fight. He's too unpredictable, as long as he is winning his fights convincingly. JMM is a bad style matchup, at any weight. They expect a tough fight with him 20 out of 20 times. Manny will not look good against him. And he will have to literally stop him cold to make him quit. Mosely, on the other hand, has shown he cannot pull the trigger, any longer. If they can avoid the few big shots, he is guaranteed to tire, and they can win a UD.
Mosley was no higher than 5th on my list, after Floyd, Berto, Marquez, and the Bradley-Alexander winner. I knew the Floyd fight wasn't happening and it looks like they're going to let Khan fight the Bradley-Alexander winner, so that left Marquez and Berto. Either one of those two would've been a better fight, but I'll contribute to the problem by buying the Mosley fight anyway just because I don't want to miss one of Pac's last fights. I hope they at least have a decent undercard to help me feel a little less screwed about the whole thing, but I'm not counting on it.
