He's been losing to more bums and a lot of it was by TKO & KO. We have to remember that wlad said he has the best chin out of all the opponents he ever faced. What seems to be a problem ? Was Peter always like that ? Or something happened after the Klitschko fight ?
As a younger fighter, Sam Peter was a tough contender with a lot of strength, durability and tenacity. But he took too many beatings. Wasn’t consistently in shape.. and like so many, hung around too long. I didn’t realize he was fighting again but if he is, he really should be retired.
6 years ago he was touring the country with Mayorga and Yori Boy Campos fitting lames in out of the way spots. He knocked out a 300 pound ex hockey player in Oklahoma City, but Mayorga stole a car from the promoter and that kinda killed that tour. Yori Boy fought for another year in Montana fighting 6 round fights against guys that had no business with gloves on their hands.
Discipline was a huge issue with Peter. Throughout the course of his career there were always stories about him skipping training session, smuggling junk food into camp etc. At some point he lost his fire inside the ring, as someone else said. It's hard to say when, maybe after Maskaev? I was never a fan of Peter, but I have to say that I felt horrible for the guy when he lost to Klitschko. The look on his busted up face as he wobbled back to the corner was really hard to see.
Fell in love with his power, didn't sharpen his game, wasn't the most disciplined even within his limited game plan. He certainly had the physical assets to create an effective championship game.
I mean...just look at him. The textbook example of a modern underachiever Heavyweight. Obese, lacks finesse, doesn't have a plan B beyond simply overpowering people, doesn't do enough road work, can't fight on the inside that well, blocks punches with his chin rather than developing defense, etc. Even without old age, having even 2-3 of these problems would have spelled certain doom for Peter's career.
He wasn't all that great to start with. He was tough enough, sure, but crude and never improved as his career went on. He gained notoriety after the Williams KO but he was out boxed by James Tony in the first fight which showed how limited he was. Being counted by an immobile guy inches shorter round after round. Now he's fat, old, he was probably always older than he said he was and has taken a few bad KO's. The damage all adds up over time and because he has no fitness he can't recover from a good punch.
Just took too much punishment, and ended up ballooning up in weight, making him a even easier punch bag target. The weight gain is usually a massive sign of muscle loss. He seemed to lose alot of explosive speed when he turned into the Nutty Proffessor.
Just checked his boxrec profile. It’s marked as “ inactive “ and he hasn’t fought since 2019. Hopefully it stays that way
