Manny Pacquiao didn't win Sportsman of the Year, despite deserving it more than any boxer ever has, and despite arguably deserving it more than any other athlete did in 2009. Not only for what he accomplished in the ring, but for what he accomplished out of it. This man threw an entire country on his back. A country ravaged by natural disasters. One man was able to lift an entire country's spirits. Pacquiao was right out there after the typhoon, providing aid to his fellow country men. You can't tell me he didn't deserve the award for things types of things. I am a hardcore Yankees fan, and I love Derek Jeter, but he didn't deserve the award more than Pacquiao. Pacquiao would have been a newer, fresher pick, one that made a statement, and shown how far he has thrust boxing back into the spotlight. But no...Sports Illustrated just couldn't bring themselves to pay any attention to boxing. Hell, the I thought Pac would get the cover after beating Cotto, but all they featured was a short, one page article regarding the fight...I'm so disappointed in SI.
it was a friggin joke not to give it to pac. what he accomplished this year would be equivalent to jeter being home run king and 57 game hit streak.
But a boxer has won it before...read you history. And even if one didn't, there was no better time than now.
Jeter's much more marketable to the mainstream sports fans and his face on the cover sells more magazines.
Ali definitely won it. He might be the only boxer to have won it. I can't disagree with Pacquiao winning it but Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation has raised over 8 million in grants for multiple cities and programs. Not to mention he became the all time Yankees hit leader and won his 5th World Series. He's the face of baseball and is a professional in everyway. I feel like I'd be taken more serious if I had a different avatar.
SI essentially quit covering Boxing around 1996 or so. Back in the 70's and 80's they had Boxing on the cover all the time and tons of articles.
