I'm planning to go on a heavy 1970s/1980s dvd selection spree just shortly, and I want to specifically select fights that show great great fighters at their brilliant best, their real virtuoso performances. I'm looking for 5 fighters and 5 fights for my 1st dvd, so I would really appreciate anyone naming a performance that they think shows a truly great fighter on top of his game (preferably an exciting fight).

I have named the 5 fighters I'd like, and for some of them I have mentioned the fights I have in mind. But if you disagree with my choice or you think another fighter should be on this Essential Selection dvd set, then please say who you would omit and who you would replace him with:

    - Pernell Whitaker
    Whitaker v Ramirez II

    - Roberto Duran
    Duran v De Jesus II

    - Carlos Monzon
    Monzon v Napoles

    - Alexis Arguello
    ???

    - Mike McCallum
    ???

    Thoughts/opinions??

Duran vs Dejesus III (Dominating performance)
    Monzon vs Rodrigo Valdez I
Arguello vs Escalera I or II

I'd replace McCallum with Sanchez, Leonard, or Hearns but that's just me ;-)

p.s. you couldn't go wrong with Hagler against Minter, Sibson or of course Hearns.

The 2nd Duran-Dejesus was the most entertaining of the 3, but Duran was at his best in the 3rd match. That's Duran peak performance at his peak weight. The Leonard win was the most impressive though since he beat a great undefeated Leonard, while he was above his best division.

I recommend to watch the first fight of Monzon-Benvenutti. Monzon's title-winning performance, and a brutal KO. By and large though, I found Monzon ugly as hell to watch.

Pernell Whitaker: either rematch with Ramirez or McGirt.

    Alexis Arguello: Alfredo Escalera 2.

    Mike McCallum: Donald Curry

Edit: Actually maybe Michael Watson instead for Mike McCallum.

I already have enough of Leonard and Hearns on dvd though, same with Chavez, Pryor and Hagler, that's why I left them out. I have seen a few McCallum fights but I don't actually own any, hence me sticking him in there.

What Sanchez fight would you recommend mate?

Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez is his signature performance. Two wins vs Danny Lopez were great efforts also. Enjoy your fights!

    Whitaker-McGirt I, Duran-Moore or Duran-Cuevas, Monzon-Valdez I, Arguello-Mancini, McCallum-Toney I. Good examples of good performances by great fighters.
