Come on. Duran was great in Montreal, but the revisionist myth making is getting to be just too much. That was a close, hard fought fight that Duran deservedly won, but not in any way a schooling. And I think you have to expand on "average fundamentals". Defensively there have been more responsible fighters, he relied quite a bit on his reflexes, but in terms of punching, especially in combinations, he was up there with the very best ever.
They've been listing weight for more than a decade. You have to join and when logged in voila. It's free and easy and well worth it.
Corrupt or incompetent what the difference? You tell me one thing Steele did that night other than stand there like furniture. Did he deduct a point for any of Leonard's fouls? Last time I checked it wasn't open season on the Middleweight Champion to be Hit low, held and hit, hit on the break, hit after the bell. In case Steele was confused by the variety of fouls being committed. They were all done by the same fighter. It's does say on page 1 of the rulebook that (any challenger can hit the champion low as long as he does a cute Bolo windup and his name is Ray Leonard) I knew Marvin Hagler was tough didn't know he had nuts of Steele.
I don't know if this was intentional but it's the funniest thing I've ever read by anyone, no hyperbole.
How do you rate him over all as a fighter? Top Ten PFP How would he have done in the years previous, 30s,40s, etc? He cleans out the welterweight division and goes 3-2 against his namesake. How would he look fighting right now? He is a top welterweight in any era P.S. This isn't heavyweight boxing where boxers of yore might be at a disadvantage to giants in hypothetical matchups. Ray is still fighting men his own size.
I'd have more chance of winning lotto 300 000 times in a row than than witnessing redrooster/marky overrating SRL. Soi i feel your humor!
One of my favorite of all time. I see him a bit different from the average fan though. Just wish he'd have fought more relevant opposition and been more consistent during his time in the 80s Would have liked to have seen big matches vs Pryor, Curry in the early 80s and gone on to someone like say, a Michael Nunn instead of Lalonde. Never really fulfilled the potential that people saw in him. Extraordinarily intelligent man with vast insights as a color commentary and a huge asset, not to mention quite fast and versatile. Not sure how I'd rank him as ATG.
He was still fast but he'd never faced anyone with Terry's speed or the ability to get him in trouble in the blink of an eye. Still love Ray though! Read my post just above
