This guy has always intrigued me. Had a decent 33-8 record. He decisioned both Palomino and Cuevas before they won their welterweight titles. He then fought tough matches with contenders Dave Green and Harold Weston although he lost both. Unfortunately, most people remember him from getting blitzed by a pre-title SRL in 1 round shortly before Leonard beat Benitez.

Has anyone seen his fights with Cuevas, Palomino, Green or Weston? I never have and wonder if they exist. Did he just get caught cold by Leonard or was he washed up by that point? I did find this interview with him and interestingly, he claimed Cuevas was a tougher fighter than Leonard.

He was a good mobile boxer with some cute moves. He could be hurt and discouraged though and was let down by his lack of power. Not the strongest fighter around.

The combination Leonard blitzed him with was outta this world. Unreal the combination of speed, and power Ray was blessed with.

The Hawk was a CLASS A fighter using RING style ratings,WE had some pretty good jr. welters, welters in L.A. Monroe Brooks was anther good un. We had a guy Zovek Barajas he kod Backus in 3,drew Palamino (he actually won) beat real good Jr. kennedy of hawaii, then fell apart. Oscar albarado was a good un, he won jr. middle title.:happy

I've seen his fight with Cuevas. Price won a close, debatable decision. Price got off to an early lead but Cuevas finished strong. Based on that better-than-expected losing effort, Cuevas (who was otherwise unknown to that point) was given a shot at Angel Espada, and turned in an even more surprising effort by bombing him out in 2 rounds.

    Junior Golden Gloves Finals
    1964

I had Romulo Ventura fighting Andy “The Hawk” Price in the finals of the 1964 Junior golden Gloves at the Valley Garden Arena, both were 12 years old, Andy gets in the ring first, we now make our way to the ring, Romulo starts his climb up the stairs, he puts one leg over the bottom rope and he sees Andy shadow boxing and looking like a minute Sugar Ray Robinson, Romluo turns around and looks me in the eye and said to me: “I don't feel like fighting tonight after all”.

I gave Romulo a shove into the ring and told him: “he looks pretty, but can he fight?” Romulo fought that night and gave Andy a good scrap losing by decision.

Thanks for all the input guys. It's funny that Price states in the interview I posted that he made his mistake against Leonard by trying to KO him. As Price was not a puncher and Leonard had a good chin, that seems like a curious strategy.

Andy was expected to give Ray Leonard several rounds of solid work before succumbing to Ray's greater Ambition and Class, but would prove to be an excellant "Sharpener" for the Shifty Benitez along the way, However somewhere along the way i think Leonard decided to send a message to the Benitez camp, And Andy paid the Price so to speak, I doubt many could have clipped the Hawks wings so quickly then a Leonard with perhaps an Agenda !?

I saw Andy Hawk Price Give Dave boy green a terrific full distance tussle on UK TV, in fact it Was Andy who came closest to winning by Ko, which of course he wasnt ment to do, he was ment prove a cagey crafty spoiler, who might raise a few questions, but ultimately, in the face of "The Fen Tigers" aggression, would cave in, in the later rounds, it didnt quite happen like that, Andy proved cagey under pressure, and determined rideing out a lot of Dave Crude attacks, and answering with classy counters, in the 9th round ? (as i recall) Andy caught Dave with a Big left Hook cum uppercut, that Made Daves Head Rotate like Linda Blairs in the Exorcist, most viewers were mystified how he kept upright, he ceretainly was lucky to be able to smoother for the rest of the round, in the intermission, frantic leg rubbing and Towel fanning ensued, and Dave, Warrier that he was, (his corner were Worriers by this point !) managed to keep the aggression going and a fatigued Andy boxed his way to the final bell, a close shave for Dave, If Andy had been blessed with a bigger punch, and perhaps more of a predatory attitude, he would probably of initiated more, instead of seeking to resond, and would therefore of been a more of a true Hawk. on his night a good boxer but not one the elite would lose sleep over.

Welterweight Andy (The Hawk) Price, beaten only once in 23 pro fights, now is co-managed by Burt Reynolds (r) and TV's
Six Million-Dollar-Man, Lee Majors, who hope to keep Price active. Andy has not fought since last March. He meets Rudy Barro
in tomorrow night's 10-round main event at the Olympic. Hawk's record is 19-1-3. Photo dated: January 28, 1976.
