I just have violent knee jerk reactions to seeing Floyd or anyone from the past 25 years really, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sam Langford or Ray Robinson. Just almost feels insulting. With Roy being rated that high, I'm guessing you give heavy favor to potential H2H match-ups, like with Roy's established dominance H2H against other greats like Toney and Hopkins?
Yeah, I weigh the eye-test at roughly 1/3 and the actual resume at 2/3. It's not an exact science, but then again, neither is any other method, with the possible exception of the boxrec algorithm approach which yields the following very questionable list: Floyd Mayweather Jr Manny Pacquiao Bernard Hopkins Carlos Monzon Joe Louis Archie Moore Julio Cesar Chavez Sugar Ray Robinson Marvin Hagler Oscar De La Hoya Roy has a pretty decent combination of 'eye-test' rating and significant wins. I know a lot of folks dwell somewhat on his more recent resume, but I don't put a lot of stock in what he did after Tarver 1, at an age when the overwhelming majority of professional boxers have hung them up.
'Like Maske at middleweight' - is that Henry Maske you're referring to? If so, what point of comparison is he in an all-time p4p list?
Thank you for recognizing there is no one criteria for a mythical question! My list changes, as I have no one criteria to judge how a fighter from 1944 beats fighter from 1998 vice verse. Criteria(s) Based on longevity, title defense(s), durability & win/loss ratio: 1. Ray Robinson 2. Henry Armstrong 3. Archie Moore 4. Jack Johnson 5. Harry Greb 6. Sam Langford 7. Kid Gavilan 8. Joe Louis 9. Floyd Mayweather 10. Sandy Saddler (Ali not here because he didn't get the chance to prove longevity and losing a title 3x to win it back isn't a definition for durable) Based on skill-set: Mastering Defense & Offense (during their prime) 1. Ray Robinson 2. Clay/Ali 3. Roy Jones Jr. 4. Henry Armstrong 5. Floyd Mayweather 6. Salvador Sanchez 7. Pernell Whitaker 8. Jack Johnson 9. Julio Cesar Chavez 10. Robert Duran (I can't put Burley on any list- He lost 2x to Ezzard Charles- & Fritize Zivac--the big names who did fight him, and I have no idea who the fighters are that he lost to. Went 8-3-1 in a 2 year span during his prime years --edit---Ali, RJJ & Sweepea during their prime relied mostly on talent, not skills. Nevertheless they were virtually untouchable during their youth.
1. SNV 2. Joe Calzaghe 3. Carnera 4. Meehan 5. Jimmy Young 6. 90s Foreman 7. Oliver McCall 8. Elmer Ray 9. Jerry Quarry 10. 70s Foreman
I don't think it really needs to be spelt out in each thread that we're talking about professional boxing rather than amateur. So a Henry Maske reference in a conversation about all time top 10 p4p professional boxers is just bizarre.
Even if we are counting amateurs, WTF has Teofilo Stevenson done to be ranked ahead of Greb, Armstrong and Robinson?
