I’d call this more of a ‘we reap what we sow’ thing — Golota had fouled himself out of two fights he was winning vs. Bowe because he was getting holes punched in his face and he didn’t wanna be there. So he’d shown what the British used to call ‘a bit of the geezer’ already. Can’t keep crying wolf. It in no way saddened me or most observers seeing him getting what many of us felt he deserved.
It was fear and cowardice that caused Golota to quit. Tyson even told him at the prefight press conference "Laugh now, cry later!" Those injuries were fake as $hit. The only real evidence was the turd in the back of Golota's trunks.
Monzon outsized a few of his opponents but perhaps Monzon vs Naploes is the best fit for the thread premise.
I remember me and my granddad was watching Patterson vs Liston and he said it's like a boy fighting a man.

Hi Puggy. Good call, you know something, in all my years of following boxing this fight stands out as the most eagerly awaited for me, I couldn't get enough of Napoles, we over here in the UK didn't get to see him that much in the late 60s early 70s, same with Olivares, I loved everything about him, the moustache, the sloping shoulders of a true puncher, the M and N on the legs of of his shorts, when the Ring or some such did an article on him, I was over the moon, well remember when the edition of his fight with Pruit came out here, fantastic photo of Napoles unloading on Pruitt, it was one of the few times Napoles went into a fight angry, witness the early ending, the scribe wrote " it was the biggest mismatch in Monterrey, since Pancho Villa took on the firing squad "with the Monzon fight, the front of Boxing News showed them both from waist up, the paper had Monzon a favorite, but said at 150lb Napoles will be punching very hard, as we know it was a rout, Jose just to small to compete with the brooding, menanacolc Monzon , how sad I was the next Friday to see that my man was beaten up and vanquished, such are the memory's. Even now when I see their names in print, it gives me warm glow. stay safe buddy, your posts speak well of you.
But a 22 year old boy won on Feb 25 1964 when Cassius Clay, 22, defeated a nearly 40 year old Sonny Liston for the title.
Hey Mike, I remember the Carlos Monzon vs Jose Mantequilla Napoles World Middleweight Title bout well on Feb 9 1974 in Paris, France. Napoles did display such courage facing a bigger man that had a big right hand, Napoles would never be the same after that fight.
Cheers Mike. I always like reading other people’s real time perceptions and feelings on fights. For fans of Napoles, the Monzon fight would’ve been tough to swallow. Again, Carlos was just too big.
Tomasz adamek vs vitali Klitschko, the size disparity was huge between the two, hence looking like a man vs child in favor of the Ukrainian over his blown up Lt heavyweight opponent named "highlander".
