it's an often overlooked fight in ali's career...when he came to croke park in dublin to fight al 'blue' lewis....my grandfather was at it and it was something he was very proud of and would tell anyone slightly interested...it was jesus coming to ireland for him years later i was near ringside to see lennox lewis fight in dublin, after he had lost his title for the first time... anyhoo..this was a few fights after ali lost to frazier i think...not long before the norton broken jaw fight... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T8jr8WQC8I[/ame] my old grandad gave lewis great credit for giving it a good go and being very tough... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFoV00YHAUk[/ame]
Only Ali coulda got into Croke park. Was a better scrap than i had first anticipated and kudos to Blue for having a go. I was at that Lewis fight too. He fought j us tin fortune and from up where i was sitting, hit him 3 successive right uppercuts which looked class. Ive never seen the fight on tv so im hoping it looks as good as what i thought it did. What i remember most bout that fight was when i went home the next day and the place was like Bierut cos a paratrooper was let out of jail early.
i thought fortune did alright, then when i saw the tv replay it looked like he was getting battered...amazing how different it looked on screen from being there... there were some great nights in the point around then...lewis, mccullough, hamed, collins...
I remember it well. Lewis came to fight, and Ali had a cold,so it was better fight than many anticipated it would be. Good undercard too, featuring John Conteh and Joe Bugner.
