I'm a Brit so I'm probably asking a silly question since the US is so mammoth with a number of different cable providers but is there any pressure being put on the big 2 from customers to clip Arum & Haymon etc unhealthy grip on Boxing. I know it's extremely hard to compare with our little Island but when our PPV boxing providers Sky have tried to shaft us with BS over here we have pressured them with twitter campaigns etc which have actually worked to a degree in improving the product being offered to customers. Talk of Mayweather v Pac/Khan in May etc is complete BS and we all know it's not going to happen- it's going to be something like Mayweather V Garcia Pac v Jessie Vargas Khan v Guerreo ( this is actually a good fight but not what we want) It seems to me as since Haymon/GBP/Arum etc all have their own agendas the only way they can be brought in line is for HBO & Showtime to flex their muscles and put a block on broadcasting the likes of Pac- Vargas which is a complete joke Typical Arum in house fight which will be shipped out to Macau to offset the low PPV ratings. HBO should tell Arum to fcuk off and let him attempt another top rank PPV if he wants that fight which I understand at the time he was doing them didn't work to well.
Cant compare PPV and regular programming though. TR has only ****ped up on the PPV side lately - but on PPV its the promoter who typically assumes the burden of risk. Since the promoters assume the burden of risk on PPV, the network putting on the event has relatively little influence on the bout. If either network had any real say, Floyd and Manny would have fought years ago on HBO PPV because HBO would have made the most money and gotten the most media exposure for that fight. (when both were HBO fighters)
Mayweather will not fight Garcia and Pacquiao will not fight Vargas. Each of those fights would do terrible on PPV. For those fights to take place the guarantee would have to be well under 10 million and I dont think either Mayweather or Pacquiao are going to fight for that type of money.
Yes the network does have a risk. It costs millions to televise these big events and I know that in the case of Floyd Mayweather and Showtime they give him a guaranteed purse which he gets regardless of how well the fight sells.
Like you have stated, Khan vs Guerrero, is a good fight. I don't have a problem with that being next. I think it will be an intriguing fight to say the least and has the potential to be a cracking contest. Khan or Guerrero shouldn't be held to the same standard as Floyd or Manny as they aren't pay per view fighters.
CBS underwrote Floyd guarantee, not SHO actually. His guarantee is atypical, and unfortunately for SHO no control over his opponents or the undercard was apparently written into the agreement. HBO or SHO can decide if an event is PPV worthy or not, but since that determination is usually made based on the percieved drawing power of the A-side star the fans are out of luck. SHO will be airing Floyd and HBO will be airing Manny on PPV regardless of who they fight or who is on the undercard. CBS proper might take a bath on Floyd's guarantee, but again thats atypical. An event would have to sell almost no units for the network to not make their money back on production costs, but the promoter would take a bath in that scenario.
There will always be mediocre fights in between major ones, that's just normal and going by common sense. No fighter can keep facing top level opposition and not eventually wear down from the tough training camp, psychological pressure and end up more susceptible to injuries.
Yes, even if they fight twice a year only. A drunken simple minded loser like you doesn't have the brains to comprehend training camps in the modern era, age, money, negotiations, TV networks and many more things that come with activity and major fights. I sure as hell won't educate yet another worthless idiot either.
I'm actually a big fan of British boxing and love the way things are set up over there (minus the referee-judged fights and British stoppages). You guy have a good thing going with mainstream coverage of minor fights, local rivalries, etc. I think HBO and SHO will eventually have to change something. Once Pac and Floyd retire you'll hopefully see less of fighters thinking that just because they're semi-decent they deserve massive compensation for fighting bums twice a year.
Don't try to excuse the twice-a-year model. It exists because the fighters get paid so much that it's often overkill for them to fight twice. Nothing to do with anything else.
