When did a fight completely surpass your expectations?

One of the great things about watching boxing is when a fight you're not expecting much from, ends up blowing you away.

I expected Froch-Pascal to be a really ugly clash of styles. I thought their hands-low style would lead to both of them waiting on the other guy to throw first, with not much in the way of action.

Instead we got an instant classic.

I wasn't particularly looking forward to Taylor-Winky either but it turned out to be one of the best Middleweight title fights in years.

    What are your favourite examples?

Another recent example is Martinez vs Williams.

Martinez-Williams is a good shout. I was expecting a good fight but not the war they both served up.

    Paul Willams vs Sergio Martinez.

Disappointed with the failure of a Williams/Pavlik fight, I really wasn’t too keyed up about a small Argentinean coming in as a replacement. But how wrong was I!

Martinez comes in and gives Williams the fight of his life, before unjustly having the fight stolen from him. And what a great round that first one was! I loved watching the imposing 6ft 3 giant be sent flying in to the ropes and on his butt after running in to that right hook. Martinez was brilliant that night, and earned him the recognition he deserved.

Dunne-Cordoba, two fighters who prefer to box put on probably the second best fight of 2009.

This year's special was Estrada-Rivero. Looked like a crappy swing bout on paper, but it's my FOTY so far.

    Lewis-Vitali is another one.

Lennox was an ATG Heavyweight but wasn't really known for being in thrilling fights. Vitali still had question marks around him at this point but they combined to put on a classic brawl.

You really didn't expect Cotto/Margarito to be great?! I remember being more excited about that fight than any in recent years.
