Seems we have conflicting views out there. Some people say he just recently became Canelo's mandatory, yet other people say its been this way for 3 years lol. I assume the 3 years thing is people getting it confused over how long Benavidez has wanted to fight Canelo as opposed to being his mandatory, but then maybe I'm on that?

I have no idea frankly. This whole situation is confusing.

Been wondering this myself, everyone keeps repeating it so I thought it was fact. But, I can't finding anything saying he was mandatory until the Plant fight which was last year, which makes perfect sense that Canelo has until sometime in March to accept him as mandatory. That would be a year.

That interim WBC title. People assume that it automatically means mandatory spot. It doesn´t.
At it´s best it´s just a money grab by the WBC.

This. Although he was the interim champ two years ago, which was supposed to essentially be a challenge to Canelo's position as champ upon Canelo's return to the division.

What is the point of being undisputed if you can ignore someone who is the interim champ AND your mandatory to fight JMWs and WWs?

Canelo has given the term 'undisputed' a whole new meaning.

    Blame the WBC.

The interim belt used to mean the belt holder was next in line for the actual belt, but this is a thing of the past.
Technically, the last mandatory was Yildrim.

It´s the same **** with the WBA. David Morrell won the interim belt in 2020 and has been the regular champ sine 2021.
He should have been given the opportunity to unify years ago but he can only dream.

I do blame the WBC, but Canelo is also to blame. There is no reason he needs to hold onto the WBC title if he isn't going to address DB's dispute to it.

It is what it is, though. Just very unfortunate for the fans.

    Yea, I get that sentiment.
As a Canelo fan, it´s pretty bad right now.

He fought Trout, Lara, Floyd, Golovkin...Jacobs. Heck, even tho is was a well calculated risk, he even went to 175 twice.
But now he wants nothing to do with Benavidez? Weird, and frustrating to say the least.

Yea interim is supposed to be when a guy can't defend because of injury of something, but now its just yet another secondary title at times.
