    AND WHY?
When i was a kid,the big stuff(Leonard,Hagler, Hearns, Duran, etc) and smaller domestic stuff were in midweek.
Now they are invariably on Saturday.
Anybody know why and when this change occurred?:?

Good question I wish I had the answer for. I remember Hagler-Leonard, Tyson-Spinks, and Foreman-Cooney were all on Monday night. Foreman-Holyfield, Holmes-Holyfield and Hearns-Barkley II were all held on Friday night. Now it seems the big fights are only on Saturdays.Must have something to do with money and the promoters feel that Saturday will generate more buys and more revenue than a weekday. Just my guess.

I'd imagine it's to do with the global fight audience also. It's a lot easier to sell a fight that's on at 1AM or 2AM in the morning because of time differences if it's on Saturday night / Sunday morning, than on Monday night / Tuesday morning! Now the audience is more spread between at least the US and Europe, and also further afield in the East too, so the time needs to take account of it being watched in different timezones.

The reason fights were on Fridays and Mondays was that the casinos wanted to create a long weekend for the gamblers. For Saturday night fights people have the option of coming into town Saturday morning, staying one night and leaving Sunday morning to get back to work, Friday fights and esp. Monday nights meant people were more likely to arrive earlier for the weekend or go home later.

I don't know if that qualifies as a "big fight."

Usually "big fights" have a belt at stake. This one did not and was supposed to be the "last hurrah," if you will, for Vargas (who I'm told is staging a comeback as we speak) who was one of my favorite fighters during the mid to late nineties.
