hmm... Sometimes I wonder? maybe its true since this fight sent chucks career in freefall, but Rampage was just a horrible matchup for Liddell. Better chin, power about even, great wresting, and superior boxing, liddell was just not able to beat rampage anywhere. I still belive liddell is the best mma lhw, followed closly by Wand (really to me they are interchangeable). Though I think its Shogun who does the best h2h. Especially under PRIDE rules. A few more fights and Jones may take it. Anyway I guess in the end I have to agree with stoo, Rampage obviously ended Chucks prime.
I think the Rampage losses neatly bookmark Chuck at his best imo, with the Wandy win being the last hurrah
In response to the second question why Chuck couldnt beat Jardine, Chuck really pushed to take jardine out early, when he wasnt able to close the show chuck kind of went into a cruise control wait and see type of approach. Jardine was able to set up a rhythm and never really give chuck a chance to get back the momentum he had in the first round. If they had fought before the rampage fight when chuck was still champ, I think it would have been a different result, liddell just had more fire then, doubt he would have let up and let jardine win the decision.
Probably as soon as Rampage laned that big right hook and shattered his punch resistance and sharpness.
Chuck was an just another hyped up ameriCAN. Horrible boxing by cokehead. The majority of Zuffa fighters were C level fighters compared to PRIDE.
I don't think one guy ended his prime, I think it went away with age and his love of partying. I think it ended before the 2nd Tito fight. He really didn't look all that great in that fight IMO. Rashad is the one that took away his punch resistance.
I think Chuck's peak was probably around 04-05 but by 06 he was slowing down alittler as afterglow has stated. Chuck was getting older, drinking quite a bit and it took its toll. I think hes still a good fighter even now but the punch resistance was gone. As for Jardine to me Chuck looked like he didnt even train even if his recent losses to Franklin for example Chuck still had good timing. Agianst Jardine he just looked so sluggish and his timing was way off.
Chucks entire game was based on sharpness - reflexes, timing, distance and his chin and power did the rest. His game is a difficult one to adapt with age. He couldn't fight like Couture or Hopkins do as they age. He was still going hell for leather but always losing the battle of the sharpness and his chin stopped helping him with the few that got through.
Chuck never had a great punch resistance. He had a decent chin but it was certainly not of the PRIDE variety. :yep
