When did Duran (& Mgmt) realize he could never beat Benitez?

And in the No Mas fight, he was filled with something else all together.

 

I remember that was the excuse way back or more specifically Duran said he drank 2 gallons of water and had a huge steak before the fight. Why didn't he binge drink and eat during all his years as lighweight champ? He chooses his biggest fight ever to drink 2 gallons of water and have a steak knowing that might upset anyones stomach.

 

Roberto was known to partake in over-eating.

He was on his last poo of the night, of his daily ritual of 8 poo's. The previous 7 were standad poo's, but this last one was pefect plop. Like the apple on Newton's head, the poo gracefully landed in the water, and then it hit him,

was at this fight. Duran couldn't do Sh*T!! Benitez was too good!!!!

 

Roberto Duran would dominate Wilfred Benitez in

1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Wilfred has it in 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Roberto would have defeated a 'shop-worn and fragile' Wilfred anytime after that.

 

Two things to consider when comes to the Benitez-Duran fight, timing and styles.

I think this was Benitez's best fight he ever fought. Add that Benitez was at his physical peak, strength and conditioning wise.

Styles, slick boxers with good hand speed always tended give Duran hell (think Ray Lampkin). None were probably as slick as Benitez.

At lightweight Duran could eventually wear down the slick boxer with his superior strength. Not so with Benitez, as Benitez was the stronger of the two for this fight.

 

Good point. If De Jesus had enjoyed the same physical advantages in their rematch, he'd have won.

But then, who wouldn't have problems with a faster, at least equally strong, really slick, experienced and skilled boxer?

together in late-1980, for the Welterweight Championship.

Not sure if Wilfred could make 147 lbs. though, but for a $1,000,000 fight
purse, he would do it.

 

Well just about everyone would have a difficult time with a faster, equally strong boxer.

My point was that that type boxer was always the most difficult for Duran, say like a puncher was poison for Kenny Norton. A strong, heavy handed brawler was never a problem for Duran (even an old Duran), someone like Iran Barkley. But an Edwin Viruet was hell for him.
