The rules should have been followed, yes, but there have been plenty of great fights where that line has been stretched, if we're gonna start pulling on that thread.

Bottom line, the burden of worthiness in this case was on The Champ, Kessler, to show more savvy.

The one at 1:52 looks like the Hagler classic to me.. throw the punch and follow through with the head. The technique is as old as the hills. Its subtle though rather than blatant.

3.16 is a clear, rather than blatant butt. A blatant butt to me is one like round 10. He's come from wide and low and smacked his head into kessler, obviously hurting both guys. The ref saw that one and was quick to look for damage you notice. If that were an isolated incident I would certainly call that unintentional requiring nothing more than a "mind the head" from the ref, but when stuff like that is going on every round its not on. Ward is a pro boxer with years of training. Of course there will always be head clashes in boxing but when one guy is initiating all the clashes and doing it regularly he damn sure knows what he is doing.

The fact is butting, like hitting below the belt, is a foul. Every boxer hits below the belt on occasions by accident and every boxer butts on occasion by accident. But if you consistently foul, whether intentional or not, you should be warned and if it continues points should be taken. If it goes on after that you are liable to be DQ'd.

The butts up till round 8 were not that bad in and of themselves it was just there was too many of them. The round 8 butt that opened the eye deserved a very strong warning at the very least. The round 10 one to my mind deserved a point off, no question. Refs simply cant allow that sort of thing otherwise all fights will end early on cuts.

I reiterrate though even with all that said its Kesslers duty to defend himself from butts and to discourage his opponent butting him, by fair mean or foul.

I am wondering for the guys who are crying foul toward Ward in this fight what do you think of Ricky Hatton?
