The game evolved but Sullivan was inactive through most of it .. to me he was a physical marvel, a cultural icon and artery that through his unprecedented celebrity drew worldwide attention to what was previously a backroom, ugly game ...Through his star power it evolved into a national sport ..

No, there is inconclusive evidence that they had a gloved contest, and indeed perhaps more than one.

Kilraine, Burke, Cleary, Mitchell, McCaffrey, Greenfield boxed each other on pretty even terms, I actually rate Burke the best of them.

So gloved but still the other tactics I mentioned which is beyond disputable so why does gloves or not mean ? Again , an irrelevant detail .. it was not M of Q in any rational discussion .

He schooled Corbett, though there would be the obvious defense, that Corbett was still Green.

This is a guy that Sullivan dominated.

This was an era where the rule sets overlapped.

The vast majority of the bouts in that era, were Queensbury bouts.

I know that John L. Sullivan and Jake Kilrain had at least four glove contests, but they were listed as exhibition bouts (whatever that meant then), in Chicago, I believe. Somebody recently had a poster of one of the fights for sale on eBay.

If so, then this sort of ties up some of his other unfinished business, such as Godfrey.

Goddangit, you beat me to it!
I was gonna say it was a trick question, because Mr. Sanders hadd by then retired & fully dedicated himself to documenting The Sweet Science.
Which would likely make him north of 200 years old. :susurro::icon_writing::eyepop:

I regret that I have slipped on my promise here, but it is the season to get sloshed, and that has not helped!

OK, the history of Mr Sullivan's interactions with Mr Killrain, based on Adam Pollack's research:

In 1880 they boxed three or four hard rounds, depending upon source, and Killrain is said to have received some punishment.

In 1882 they met at Revere Hall in Boston, and it is said that Sullivan agreed to go easy.

Sullivan claimed that they met for a third time in 1884, at monument all in Charlestown.

Sullivan claimed that Killrain made him agree to go easy.

In the same year Killran's manager announced that he would meet any fighter in the world except Sullivan.

On May 07 1887 Killrain formally challenged Sullivan.

It is probably no coincidence, that this was after Sullivan broke his arm.
