When did Marciano fall outside the top ten?

Marciano is one of my favorite heavyweights but because of the bigger men of recent times who have come onto the scene, he surely must have been replaced at some point.

I'd say in 1974 he was probably displaced by Ali after his major win over Foreman. It was a win that was mindblowing to eveyone-at the time. Nevertheless, Rocky was still ranked in the top ten.

But as time went on and the sport was adding more superstars to the heavyweight division such as Frazier and Foreman, Rocky was probably heading down in the rankings (based on his size). And since then, we've had Tyson, Bowe, and Lewis. I'm not sure he still qualifies.

Does Marciano still belong as a top ten heavyweight?

I guess he wouldn't have dropped out of my top ten until Holmes came along. As to "when" during Holmes reign, that's a tough one for obvious reasons. Few defining fights but a dominant heavyweight, like the man he pushed out.

The Holmes era is a good quess. The contenders were of pretty good size if not the highest quality-Weaver, Cooney, Dokes, Page, Witherspoon.

Cooney-Marciano. Hurts to think about it.

If one were to simply evaluate Rocky's top 10 ten merits on an "Who could Beat Whom" basis, the Rocky might struggle to get into the top 15 ! and perhaps would not be favoured to beat such as Roiddick Bowe, David Tua or Even a Buster Douglas ( From Tokyo !) - But the would be due to Rocky labouring under huge unfair physical advantages, strickly on "Who could beat Whom" Rocky would be unfairly penailsed, it is not a good barometer to measure greatess, How would Rocky do with 6' 5'' 245lb Lennox Lewis, not Very good at All i suspect, But how would Rocky do with a 6' 1" 190lb Lennox ? i know who my money would be on.

It is probably better to consider a fighter individual strengths, acheivements and accopmplishments, and their talents to evaluate greatness,

Few were fitter, harder hitting, durable and tenacious then Rocky, if rated on a Pro'Rata level then in my humble opinion, i think Rocky still has his top 10 berth.

Yep. I agree with all these picks. I'd also include Bowe and perhaps one or two others as well. I have Rocky at around #8 all factors considered, which is reasonably fair I think.

49-0 is no mean feat, as he did fight against some good opponents (to be fair, not all of 'em were bums like some proclaim). Head-to-head, though he's definitely a fair bit lower.

I really struggle to see Marciano beating a majority of fellow Top 20 HW's. Guys like Lewis, Tyson and Foreman for example would mash him. :yep

Area 53, although I agree with some of what you say, and of course, HW's have got bigger, Rocky was smaller than almost ALL Of the champs that go before him too. In other words, Rocky wasn't the last of the little champs - in fact I think Rocky was the shortest champ ever aside from Burns, at that time. He was also one of the lightest ever.

Also, there are true superheavies going before him in the shape of Willard and Carnera, as well us some really big men, Jeffries and Baer amongst them. So whether you match Rocky up with greats from his past or his future he has those physical disadvantages.

Really, how so? What's your objection?

Jeffries is less likely to cut, more durable, he can punch and here has a man who only wants to punch - not a guy he has to look for, or trick - how do you see it going?

He is my #4 HW as we are speaking. The next time a champion beats 5 #1 contenders and one #2 contender, all but one by KO, knocks out ring legends and Hall of Famer's, let me know.

If your going to push Rocky off base on size alone, might as well knock off Dempsey, Louis, and a few others in the top ten as well.

Make Lewis rank number 1, Ali drops to about 7. Rocky is still top ten. He is in my top 4. Only follow by Louis, Ali, and Johnson perhaps.
Cant rank Holmes over Marciano, because Holmes lack the big fights that the Rock had. Marciano also fought evey one of his time, were Holmes fail to unify the title, and failing to face Pages and a few others. Also there are way to many 10-0 0r 12-0 title defenses on Holmes record. Had Marciano went and defend his title against such men, he would have been critiz.

Ranking someone on a h2h basis is quite different than ranking someone based on achievements. Obviously you're going to get major differences between the two lists if we're talking heavyweights.

You are right of course, and it is also far less scientific to rank h2h, but over the years that's what my list has become. The reason? This is the ****-kicking business, and if I see a guy at 5 and know the guy at 9 could kick the **** out of him, that is problematic for me.

Yeh but styles make fights. Some still rate Frazier ahead of Foreman.

I totally agree and that's part two.

I have Frazier above Foreman myself because even though Frazier is destroyed by Foreman, Frazier has the win over my #1, Ali.

It's impossible to run it straight up.
