at what point did he reach the unbeatable fighter he became. i think he peaked in the Derrick Harmon fight and his last good showing was agaisnt clinton woods. any way i was watching some clips of jones speed and tryed to match it up agaisnt zab, pac, mayweather, talyor, alot of you guys said roy throw mostly arm punches in his combos. and not with power. let me tell you watch these clips and be amazed at the speed of jones at 175lbs. when we talk about pound for pound fights. u have to take into account that jones is faster then these smaller men. how much faster would have been if he was a 140lbs [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Qh4Ohf2XPs[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s_qdHqckFE&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E270lrkfHjQ&feature=related[/ame] i have to put tarver vs jones the 3rd fight. i know jones was finshed but still he still showed flashes [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPP9ffqGYHk&feature=related[/ame]
From memory I thought he looked pretty average in the Harmon fight...might be remembering it wrong. Though he was still physically in his peak, he looked mentally a little unfocused and unimpressed with his opposition. It was performances like these that were leading to the Roycott. When he was still fired up and looking to make his mark..like Griffin 2, Hill and Reggie Johnson. Thats about the best Ive seen him.
jones reached his peak in the calzaghe fight but it wasn't enough. a shot to **** joe calzaghe lacyied roy jones junior :deal
I think when he fought John Ruiz. That was the highest - and the hardest fall right after that. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. ROY JONES RUINED HIS CAREER MOVING UP TO HEAVYWEIGHT. He gained all of that weight and muscle mass, then drained himself losing it trying to get back to 175 to fight Tarver. I almost seems like his strength and reflexes were sapped when he lost that weight. When that fight was first announced, I wondered why he didn't tell Tarver and his people to meet him at Cruiser so he wouldn't have to lose all of that weight. The Roy Jones heavyweight experiment was a joke anyway. There was NO WAY he was going to fight Lennox Lewis, either of the Klitschkos, or any of the other big heavyweights at that time. And as a smaller man, he shouldn't have. But if he was so determined to compete as a heavyweight, he should have STAYED fighting at around 200lbs and stayed up there. I am a big Roy Jones fan and I hated to see him fall like he did. But if you think about it... he was cursed by his size... too big to be a welter/middleweight and too small to be a heavyweight. Super middle and Light Heavy were never glamour divisions.
Roy at 168lbs was him at his very best, but Roy vs. Griffin II was just a ruthless guy who wanted to murder his opponent... and that's not a Roy you'd favour too many people over.
RJJ reached his peak in the mid to late 90's when he moved to 168. He was the most dominant fighter that ever fought at that weight...period. Even though he didn't stay there long he would have crushed any of the 168 pounders fighting today and he would've destroyed any version of Calzaghe. If you guys have a chance, go watch the Bryant Brannon fight and you'll see exactly what I mean. Back then, Jones had lightning speed, power and the best reflexes I've ever seen.
I agree. He still would've dominated at LW if he never moved up. I can't see Tarver coming close to beating a peak Jones.
