When did Sugar Ray Leonard become a legend?

That doesn't stop him from being a stab in the back POS. Leonard was officially retired and hired as an advisor to Don. He knew Don had approached Marvin to negociate a fight Leonard knew this said nothing because he was negociating the fight for himself. Don had no idea. It was suddenly announced their fight was on and Leonard hit the road. I was in Ft WORTH TEXAS at the time so witnessed it all. Hagler retired after being robbed against Leonard so Don never got his chance. Don challenged Leonard but he said he was retired then came the Camacho disgusting debacle
Leonard is the lowest of the low in my book. He wanted no part of Don himself but cost him a big money fight to line his own pockets

 

Ray was hired as an advisor? Officially hired? That is something I did not know. I thought it was between friends. Was he paid? Maybe he gave him the right advice. Look after Donald was knocked out, Tompkins told him, you settle a case out of court and Ray said" This fight had a lot to do with everything. It was self explanatory" something like that. Donald would have been a big money fight to Ray? in 1997? Or when? 1987? Donald ruined that himself, but I can tell you Ray would not have fought Donald even had Donald beaten Mike. I just don't see it.

No, if he was paid to give him advice and he was not honest, that could be seen as something significant. But if he talked to him without an official role and as friend, I am not sure what Donald has to say except maybe he was dishonest. And we all know Ray is sort of slippery. Hearns always said, before I talk to Ray I put on my thinking cap. First off, I don't understand why Ray talked to Donald in the first place. If he knew he had a conflict of interest he should have avoided the conversation, but that is difficult if Donald pushed it. Are you saying Ray talked to Donald to talk him out of fighting Hagler? I think Donald was heading to fighting McCallum always and Mike thought Donald was ducking him once calling him Curry chicken. The fact remains Hagler was more Leonard's generation than Curry's. He was in the fab four group with Hearns and Duran and had fought them and Ray completed the group. Hagler and Hearns and Duran all fought each other, and Curry never fought any of them so I am not sure why Hagler would fight him over Ray. Curry had the power to become a big name by beating Mike and erasing the Honeyghan loss.

They handed Howard Davis jr similar or close money and looked what happened to him. And he was a winner too.

 

That monologue does nothing to alter the fact Leonard is a snake in the grass POS. He "advised" Don to wait & let Hagler get older knowing he was not going to be around :later: Heck you yourself called him :slippery:

 

Everyone knows Ray is slippery. I just don't see how Ray changed much if he did tell Donald that. Who was Hagler going to fight at that stage? Leonard or Curry if he had a choice? He was going to retire I think had Ray not come out of retirement.

 

No Marvin retired in disgust after being shafted against the slippery POS. Youre vainly trying to find excuses for a worthless back stabber. He vamoosed out of Texas pretty quick lol

 

howard davis WAS a legend in amateur boxing .. that will never be taken from him .. he stopped growing when he became pro though the legend didn't continue to grow .. that's where ray is different .. you can't take davis amateur content away from him ..

 

I love how ray is getting all the flack as if he wasn't sitting there being told what to do by his agent and handlers .. lmfao you guys give boxers waaaay to much credit .. it's almost like chewing out a rock band for not touring a specific area .. you are mad at a guy for something he has absolutely no control over ! .. quit getting so emotional .. the record books are sealed ..marvin haggler lost that night and no amount of crying about it will ever change things .. leonard didn't make haggler fight right handed and give away the first few rounds ...leonard didn't make haggler opt to box .. leonard didn't make haggler get older .. get real you guys are being way to emotional

For me Ray being a legend just kind of became a given at some point. His resume .. the eye test ..befor you knew it he just had the legendary status. Adleast that's how it went for me.

 

Right on the money …Thinking he could easily out box Ray.. He underestimated him Bigtime.. Not to mention that Hagler blew this fight mentally even more so later and started mimicking Ray with the bolo punches and sticking his chin out and pulling it back in .. This just wasn't Haglers game.. It's like he wanted to be the peoples' fighter in the ring, the more popular one … He just blew it all the way around .. Ray executed this fight perfectly from the timing of it to his mental game plan execution … And I was so pissed off when he got the nod because it could have gone the other way … Anyway fair decision …. And I agree with some earlier posts that there really wasn't one fight that made him the Legend … it just kind of happened over several fights for me where you were like wow this guy is the real deal, a real ATG.. Way before the Hagler fight for me
