The " every fight had to be a big fight" craze happened right after the "every fight has to either be a PPV or set up a future PPV" craze happened.

Ah, Funeka was just a name to illustrate my point. In reality, neither him nor Salka deserve a title shot at the moment.

Bonavena and Quarry were top ranked contenders when Ali fought them. He also needed a couple of tune up fights to brush off 4 years of rust before taking on Frazier. Zolley was a decent fighter but he was shot.

SRL fought Larry Bonds and Bruce Finch for world titles.

JCC Nsr fought Sammy Funetes in a world title fight.

I could go on and on. Never in the history of boxing has there been a fighter who fought elite fighters one after another constantly.

Mayweather has never faced an elite fighter in his prime and now he's rematching a guy shut out 12-0 by Devon Alexander.

If you are only fighting 1 - 2 times per year then those fights should be against the best available.

What other reason would you have to not fight the best? I mean you have plenty of time to recover and set up the best fights.

The fact you say who the f*ck is Jerry Quarry is utterly embarrassing and says a lot about you as a poster.

The problem with your argument is simply that the best don't fight the best in this era in their primes very often and that once a fighter gets really big these days, they tend to only fight once or twice a year so the fans want maximum value for those fights.

Floyd would get so much less flak for fighting the level of opposition he's fought in the last few years had he actually fought Pacquiao, Martinez, etc somewhere in between those lesser matchups. Because then the fans would know that the career-defining fights would actually get made on his end at some point. But that hasn't happened. And it's looking like we get to look forward to this year being the year of Maidana and then Khan in May 2015. As other posters have mentioned, some of those lesser names you mentioned Ali fought in between Liston, Frazier, etc, are actually fighters on par with Floyd's competition over the last few years.

Garcia is receiving criticism more off the backlash from the Herrera fight, where at the least, he did not look good and a lot of people think he lost, not really so much because he's fighting a tune-up this time.

Boxers barely fight anymore. When they do we want them against top guys.

I can't say for sure what the root cause is. In all likelihood, it is the business side of things, usually is. I can't say who they attempted to contract, or not.

It doesn't bode well that all 3 of the fights on this card are stay busy tuna fights. I will concede that it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that one of these fights ends up being much closer than it would appear in advance.

They weren't champions due to the difficulty of the division back then and also due to the fact that there weren't four belts to pick from. You can't overlook these facts when pointing fingers and judging.

Who gives rematches to club fighters ? a guy with his talents should be embarrassed about facing guys like Maidana ! I mean if this was a stay busy fight sure why not but this clown fights now twice in year and this is who he goes after again pathetic !

Boxers fight 1-2 times a year, 3 is considered active today. When you are an elite level fighter and fight twice a year those fights should come against other top guys most of the time.

Fighters in the past fought plenty of gimme fights but that was because they were fighting 4-5 times a year in a lot of cases. If Garcia fought 4-5 times this year then a guy like Salka is fine. Garcia probably fights 2 or 3 times this year(if he's lucky), no need to face someone like Salka.

If Garcia does want to spend some of his limited fights on Salka(who isn't a bad fighter just not one who should be challenging one of the top 140 guys) thats on him. The biggest problem is Showtime buying it.

Showtime will probably spend 2 million, or close to it, on this tripleheader. There is an enormous amount of better cards Showtime could put on with that kind of money.

If Showtime is going to pay Garcia or anyone else big fight money than every fight has to be a big fight.
