When did the experts get it most wrong?

Holmes-Cooney is the classic example here, upsets like Tyson-Douglas, Hagler-Leonard even don't really count as they were big upsets and almost everyone picks the fave in these scenarios. Also, did Tyson-Spinks remind the author because nearly everyone got it 'right'? Not a great deal picked Spinks to win (although I did in school in the vain hope of doing a Ron Borges a few years before). :yep

 

Yes, far more picked Ali to beat Foreman than George to beat Joe.

 

I remember Ken Norton picking Ali over Foreman. Joe Louis,Jerry quarry etc.going with the conventional wisdom that Foreman was indestructible.

 

Yeah,most went for Foreman (Louis probably picked against Ali when he fought Richard Dunn) but not the kind of majority that people nowadays think. Boxing News for example was only split 3/2 in favour of Foreman with the key staff writers. The main article picked George, Harry Mullan picked Ali by something like 10th round stoppage. Not a bad call.

 

The one that came to mind when I saw this thread was Holmes-Ali. I don't remember what the breakdown was as far as who picked whom, but I do remember sentimental Ali picks, including Sports Illustrated.
