Oscar helped them alot Calzaghe obviously Wlad. slowly but surely, by having recognizable boxers fight for and defend their titles, the WBO gained recognition. Today i give them as much recogntion as the WBC, but tbh most fighters don't, which is what really matters. edit. Actually after a quick glance over at the champions, i would rank the ABC's like this: WBC WBA WBO IBF
When people with a sense of logic started looking at the champions of WBO and the champions of the other ABC's. WBO is clearly in the same league, infact just a year ago it was probably the 2nd best belt out there who held the most prestigeous champions.
I'm not asking for anyone's opinion as to rather or not they conseder the WBO a major tittle. If you are going to insest on expressing an opion like you don't personaly reconize the WBO or any other belt as a major tittle on this threed there is not much I can do about it but that's not the question I'm asking. Also it means that your reading compresion is Worse Than My Spelling And Gramer. Like it or not it has become one. I was surprised that it has.
I think when De la Hoya started winning the belt at super featherweight / lightweight. That was about 94 or 95
From what I can gather the Ring Magazine doesn't recognize it still to this day. Their yearly Boxing Almanac lists every wieght class's champ's through out history, but nothing on the WBO. The only time Calzaghe is even mentioned in the Almanac is when he beat Lacy. My personal opinion though is that I have seen some of the best fighters I've ever seen with the WBO belt.
Barrera helped the WBO a lot too. Even when he didn't hold their official title anymore, and was only recognized as the people's champ, they allowed him to carry that belt into the ring. but if you really think about it, is there really such a thing as a "major title" nowadays? I think the Ring belt, although it's system has it's flaws, is the closest thing to a "real" title right now.
When they started getting a better calibre of champion. Simple as that. A figher makes the belt, and (in the HW ranks at least) the credibility problems the other three belts had at various points due to being held by what was seen as inferior or poor fighters helped to boost their prestige in comparison.
As long as the WBO do dumb things like have Gary Lockett ranked number one at 160 I'll consider them a joke, Frank Warren title.
