When did weight really start to tell on these awesome fighters who fought in a few divisions as they got older and gain weight? At why point did they stop being considered in the top of the lb for lb, or even a viable title contender.

After what would turn out to be Greb's last fight promoters were trying to match him for the LHW title without knowing that Greb had privately retired and would shortly have his bad eye surgically removed preventing any possibility of him ever fighting again. Greb died only a month later so he was never really considered out of the title picture despite being a faded version of his former self. I would favor even this version of Greb to beat Berlenbach who had just lost the lhw title so Greb should have been considered a solid contender even at this point in his career though he likely would have been made an underdog against guys like Delaney and Loughran.
