Mid to late 90's for me when Roy Jones was at his heights y'all must of forgot lol. After that started looking at past greats like the Durans and Leonards came up on the Mayweathers and Lennox became a better fighter personally even though i try to shy away from the bs nowadays boxing taught me timing, never overlooking an opponent the biggest was maintaining composure in battle can't get to emotional have to be able to think to act/react tactfully
This is actually a cool story. I live in CT and the first fight i saw was in 1984 when i was 8. It was on vcr and it was a replay of Duran/Leonard but not sure which. I was at my aunts house and her boyfriend at the time was a big boxing fan and he had all types of equipment in the basement and fight posters and hed let my cousins and me throw on the gloves fight a bit. So we were watching the fight and he said that he used to be a boxer and that he fought Leonard. Now being a kid youll believe anything so i thought it was cool. Several years later i asked my aunt whatever happened to him and she said they broke up because he was a bit of a drinker. I brought up the whole Leonard thing thinking he just some lying drunk and she said that it was true that he had in fact fought Leonard. Well a few years ago i hit her up and asked his name and i looked it up on Boxrec and wouldnt you know it the guy is in fact on Leonards record lol! 1977 at the Hartford civic Center (now the xl center) leonard fought and tkod Vinnie DeBarros. Now i remained a casual fan through the late 80s early 90s and by casual i mean i watched all the big names but didnt keep up with the sport like i do now. I became a hardcore fan when i first saw Tito ko Maurice Blocker and i was hooked. Couldnt get enough of Tito and the sport itself so i started watching all the top fighters and even started training for a few years. Have loved the sport ever since. There is nothing like the feeling i get when theres a big fight and the fighters start walking out. No other sport gives me that feeling. Btw i was there at Foxwoods about 15 rows back when Roy Jones Kod Montell Griffin. The sound of the punch was palpable. It was like being near a speaker when the bass hits. Ill never forget that. It was incredible!
Actually watched ufc 1 and I was 14 took up kickboxing had 10 amateur fights ( sparred peter garahm and Ben Edwards boths K1 world champs sparred a lot). Than switched to boxing, won a state national amateur boxing title, also getting my blue belt in bjj on the way, I fought and beat some Aussie fighters who have now done big things
I haven't started yet. I just use other people's opinions and pass them off as my own. Therefore Golovkin only fights cans and Mayweather is TBE.
Really took up an interest during the early to mid 80's and got hooked in the Tyson era. I was into all kinds of combat sports, due to it being in the family so to speak, but got interested in the actual history on a bit unusual way. There was a C64 game I liked to play and it had a folded poster coming with it with all kinds of historical facts, that fueled my curiosity. Then it was hard to see as many fights as you can now of course, but I watched and read as much as I could back then. There have been lapses of interest for me in different eras though.
Been watching boxing for the last 15 years but I've probably only become 'hard core' the last maybe 6 years. One of the earliest fights I remember watching was Tyson v Lewis, I missed the best of tysons years unfortunately
Back in the 80's - was born in 81. My old man had "Champions Forever" on VHS - used to watch that all the time and fights of Hagler, Hearns, Leonard... then Tyson came on the scene. In the Uk we had Screensport that used to show a lot of boxing, then Sky got involved after ITV's Big Time Boxing. Eurosport used to have a ton of boxing on too, but not many household names.
Same here bro I do recall the epic fights of Vinny Paz and Greg....ummmm forget his last name now...however they had some bad blood and two epic fights I recall watching live!! Once I was in the Army in the very late 80s early 1990 we all watched Tuesday night fights on USA network
Late 80's as a young boy, my uncle would always order the Tyson fights and be disappointed of how long they would last!
im 26 and only really started following the sport when i was about 17 or 18.. it isnt that long but since iv really followed the sport closely and have such an interest of it to me it feels like a life time
I grew up on the Tyson-Hollyfield years, there was no cable tv. It only renewed my interest during the Pacquiao Era almost became a ******* back then.
This is a portion of the reason I made this thread. With the exception of this response (thus far) y'all seem to be seasonsed, or at least a few years deep into watching boxing. If this is the case, why is this forum full of weirdo's who talk about everything except boxing? I see 200 reply threads on cats saying GGG is better than Floyd, or Ward. Or talk about how Loma is the most skilled boxer ever? Cats want to spend 10,000 replies on ggg/canelo, but don't want to talk about the Charlo's, Andrade or J Rock right at 154? This is all massively confusing to me. Likewise, I see very little technical knowledge being displayed in threads. Hmmm.
