I think I saw Emmanuel on Miguel Angel Gonzales' corner in January 1997 and then he was with Oscar for the David Kamau fight and I'm not sure if he was there for the Hector Camacho bout but it's difficult to say what relevant differences one can find in those fights... Maybe Oscar was not bouncing on his feet so much and waiting for opportunities to land a lead left hook. I recall that DLH used a right hand to stop Kamau and would use again against Charpentier in El Paso, in front of 40 thousand or something.
He worked the corner for the fights with Kamau, Camacho, and was dismissed one week before the Rivera fight in December 1997. Their were a number of reasons for Steward's dismissal. The main reason was the amount of rounds he wanted De La Hoya to spar, which De La Hoya's father disagreed with as he wanted more than Steward thought was adequate. Because De La Hoya had a very busy year back in 1997, Steward felt that the amount of rounds sparring should be cut down. Thats the main reason they parted company. Bob Arum wasn't too happy either a month before the split. Steward took De La Hoya and his girlfriend to the Holyfield-Moorer rematch and was suspicious that Steward tried to get De La Hoya to sign with Don King. It's been well known that Steward and King had been close friends for years. De La Hoya swears no meeting with King ever took place. De La Hoya's former trainer Robert Alcazar wasn't too happy of Steward's instalment as head trainer. He was a second pair of eyes for Oscar's father in camp. Steward felt Alcazar backstabbed him when he reported back to Oscar's father and told him everything that Steward was doing in camp.
