Larry Holmes' amateur career was short. On boxrec it is stated that his win vs Leroy James was his 5th amateur fight. Larry was almost 22 by then. Quite obvious that Holmes' first amateur fight has happened after he turned 20. And it is the proof that if you are talented enough, you can easily start after 20 and still have great skillset and boxing fundamentals.
19-ish probably. Although I have heard Larry say he fooled around in gloves a bit with other kids back in school, but nothing serious, just child's play. 19-20-ish is when he started proper.
