It must have been the shortest period in the history of boxing? this guy is the same limited well built guy he always was....so now Jones supposedly has turned back the clock? Lacy has never been an elite fighter. He is still in his prime and the reality is he was never an elite fighter or very good for that matter. A well built guy with mediocre skills who can beat limited past their prime guys who were pretty good once.
Between the short period of time when he was being hyped and was then exposed. Personally, I am of the opinion that he was never as good as everyone was building him up to be anyway- the post-Calzaghe results show this, IMO. I don't buy into the 'JC ruined him' theories. That's just me, though:good.
Lacy is an prefect example of hype and record padding. Build a record against boxers who are bad, hype up the "left hook lacy" aspect, wait for a title fight, and roll in the money. Get a few semi-decent fights on the basis that you actually fought for a world title (no matter how badly you were beaten) then retire, hopefully with your pockets full of cash.
He was never elite...he was slightly better before Calzaghe ofcourse but not by much. I saw Pemberton outboxing Lacy before the KO, I thought to myself that if Joe can take some punches, he will easily outbox Lacy. And I predicted the cleard UD for Joe. Kessler, Eubank & Hopkins are much bigger wins. Still give Joe a lot of credit for lacy though, that was a hell of a performance on a prime, solid champ. 4th best win.
His prime was effectively from when he won a belt in 2004 and had a string of KO's against ok opposition to sometime in 2006. I don't know if Calzaghe destroyed him or if he could have regained some sort of contender form had he not ruined his shoulder, but definitely by the time he hurt his shoulder against Tsypko, there was no returning to top form. I think an assumption that he was just always this limited is unfair an inaccurate. He's not even really hurting any of this mediocore opposition anymore. His biggest asset was his power, and it has not been evident since the Pemberton fight. He was knocking out guys better than Triple OG on a fairly regular basis. He was always limited, though many (including myself) thought he could overcome that with his brute force, but he was much better than he is now.
Agreed. People shouldn't read too much in RJJ beating him. Jones should retire with a win before he gets himself killed.
This thread looks an excuse to belittle Calzaghes crushing victory over RJJ who as I said many times, was as good when he fought Joe, as he's ever been, and Lacy just proved that. Lacy not long ago made a competitive fight of Taylor, so we can stop belittling Joes win over RJJ and accept him as the greatest of our generation.
atsch What fight were you watching? Why should Joe consider Roy as one of his best wins when Joe himself said that Jones was past it and he wasnt his old self?
