Going with the beatdown of Spinks as lineal champ, he beat James Tillis, Mitch Green, Jose Ribalta, Trevor Berbick, Bonecrusher, Pinky Thomas, Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, Larry Holmes and TNT Tubbs. I can't think of a single heavyweight who cleaned out a better division in better fashion... maybe and just maybe Louis...

Yet, town dip**** wants to say that Tunney beating a used up Gibbons has a better resume to the title.

 

Agreed. The heavyweights of the 80's were actually a talented group of men who were of decent size, reasonable age, seasoned experience, good records and amateur pedigree. One of the reasons why we can't call any of them "great" is because it just so happens that their primes coincided with those of Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson... Kinda makes ascending to greatness difficult with those two standing in the way.. In any event, Tyson plowed through that division in only 4 years, leaving virtually no survivors.. I can't think of anyone other than perhaps Joe Louis who did anything like that.

 

Finally... a voice of reason. Yes, Louis is arguable contender to this title. Liston gets an honorable mention.

Best available fighters of an era = good opposition. To argue that he never never beat a Frazier, Ali or Foreman is irrelevant.. He beat the top guys who were around and did it emphatically. Seriously Tyson's excuse mongers are delusional to say the least, with a never ending stream of revisionist lies.

It all stems from the Douglas defeat. The lies you read about it go from the sublime to the ridiculous. Some have even claimed it was his divorce from Robin Givens that was responsible for his crap performance. All very well except for one little point. Givens actually divorced Tyson a matter of days before he battered Bruno in 5 rounds a year earlier.

The undertrained excuse is even more feeble because the guy was ripped, and in fact only weighed a couple of pounds more than he had when he'd beaten Spinks.

Believe it or not, I like many others will credit Tyson for what he was, a very good fighter in a poor era, who made the most of what he had.

It is his silly nuthugging fanboys that elevate the guy to ATG status that are the problem.
