When Floyd retires will he be considered greater than he is now?

if he stops after hatton people are just gonna say man i wanted to see him fight cotto, paul williams nad who knows who else. If he beats Hatton and then Hatton takes all those guys out, who knows.

how many fighters have these credentials:

CHAMPION in 3 weight classes: 130, 135, 147
Titlist in 2 more weight classes: 140, 154

and after this year, will have been fighter of the year in 1998 and 2007.

I know we have to take into account that there were only 8 weight classes back in the day, but how many fighters have accomplished this? Taking into account the 8 weight classes, how many past fighters have won world championships in two of the classic weight classes?

No he wont be. Reason: His shitty attitude will outshine his greatness in the ring. Common Example: Charles Barkley. Remember that guy? Damn fine Basketball Player but guess what? An ******* too. What do you think folks remember more about him? His talents or his fist fights and poor showing around the media and in common places?
It works both ways however. Do you think Ali would have been as well known just from his greatness in the ring or do you think that because he was "THE" most charming boxer ever had a little to do with his legacy? Right. Or Roy Jones, Cocky as hell, but then Destoyed, embarrasted everyone. Talking ****, then totally backing it up, not pitty pattying his way to a SD or close UD.
I may be a Hater, yes. Play the mind game in the ring, sure, build the press up sure, get us fans fired up for your fights sure, DONT act like a Twat while you're at it tho everywhere you go.

 

I have to disagree with you about Barkley... not to many people that actually no basketball will deny his talent. Barkley is well known and for the most part well liked everywhere he goes, same thing with Dennis Rodman, of course he was a little off his rocker but anybody that watched and enjoyed basketball know damn well that Rodman was a great basketball player... If your talking about general public then i agree somewhat. Same applies with Mayweather, people that love boxing will remember Mayweather as a great boxer, Sports hereos in all sports are very rarely EVER looked down upon after they retire and years down the road. Ala Ted Williams, Tyson, Liston, I could go on and on. there attitude might be mentioned and probably disliked but when placed in a list of where they belong it will always go down as the way they took care of business. 10 yrs from now Mayweather will be highly regarded.. I gaurantee you 10 yrs from now people will be saying so and so vs prime Mayweather who wins. (which is always a sign of respect) just like we say now mayweather vs Ray leonard prime. Hell i've even seen Mayweaterh vs Ray Robinson. These are all signs of huge respect.

 

I think you're off base. Since you brought up a Philadelphia sports hero(Barkley), I'll use a couple of other Philadelphia sports stars to poke holes in your theory. Barkley, Allen Iverson, and Donovan McNabb are three of the biggest stars to play Philly over the last 20 years or so. McNabb has had more team success than the other two, has had no off field issues, and always conducts himself in a proffesional manner. However, Iverson and Barkley are easily more loved and more highly thought of than McNabb.

Furthermore, Barkley is one of the most beloved sports figures in America. Barkley is one the biggest reasons that TNT's basketball coverage gets such good ratings. As far as Ali goes, mainstream America, in general, were aggitated by Ali's act when he was fighting, at least in the early part of his career. He was supremely cocky and arrogant, he showed absolutely no respect to his opponents, and he went to jail for refusing to enter the draft. As time goes on people remember athletes more for their talents, and less for their personal faults.

Michael Jordan was one of the meanest son of a bitches around when he played. He constantly belittled his teammates(sometimes making them cry), he punched a couple of his teammates, he had a gambling problem, he may have been more arrogant and cocky than Ali. For a good part of his early career, many of the older players felt that he didn't respect the game, and he was viewed as a selfish player that couldn't make his teammates better. All of that is forgotten now. People only remember the highlight dunks, the shoes, and the championship runs. Basically, talent and achievements will ultimately dictate how people judge athletes, not personality and charm.

 

I stand corrected and used Barkley as a bad example. I understand that he is a Philly Hero. I apologize and didn't mean to offend anyone from that region. Tho the further away you locate to another state, the less some folks may see or remember his talents but rememrber the worst side of him. I was closed minded about the subject for my dislike of Mayweather. I'm sorry.
