Richard Steele was a greatly respected ref who made some bizarre decisions later in his career leading some to suggest he was on the take. Joe Cortez is another with a great rep who now shines out like a sore arse during fights..

    Is this a pattern?:huh

I think people are being over critical of Joe Cortez.

He sucked in the Mayweather Hatton fight - he must have thought it was his show, rather than two of the worlds best fighters in there. Also, he has got a bit carried away with his catchphrase, anyone would think he is Michael Buffer, getting it copyrighted!

There is a trend with refeeres getting too involved in the fight.Jay Nady seems to nit pick to the point that he interferes with the boxers fight plan. Smoger on the other hand , lets the fighters fight, especially on the inside.
Cortez could have been fairer if he was a little less firm with Hatton, although Ricky wouldn't have beaten Mayweather even if Stevie Wonder was the referee.

Cortez was fine in FMJ vs RH imo, he was breaking them apart because they were both fighting dirtily from the opening bell. Hatton was headlocking Mayweather every time he ducked and Mayweather was pushing his forearm into Hatton's throat when they clinched, watch the first few rounds-that's why he was getting so involved. Hatton really has no right to complain anyway, 90% of his career on Sports Network shows, beating up little lightweights and where there may as well have been a script, it was obvious the refereeing was pro-Hatton. Pushing, rubbing the top of his head on the opponents face, excessive holding, all's fair in the M.E.N, he never got cautioned, rarely was a break called and obviously he knew what the situation was.
    In summary: boo fcuking hoo.

Personally I like seeing a fight where the ref won't let them hold once in a while, watched Hagler v Mugabi the other night, great war and no holding. People say the ref should let the fighters work on the inside and I agree however a lot of people confuse holding with punching on the inside.

And let us hope they never reach the sewer-level of Dave Parris.

  10. Yes i don't like Nady:huh he over- officiates fight's, talks down to the fighters like they are children, i'll take Tony Weeks or Smoger over Nady.

Cortez has been a poor ref for awhile. He's done some wretched jobs in fights like Williams-Pakau and Quartey-Bojorquez.

He was a solid ref, but that was years ago.
