Quite possibly Froch could have survived. But he was in real trouble and in danger of getting properly stopped.

    This statement is equally true!!!

Not at the time of the stoppage though. There was only one man whose head was rolled around by clean punches on the ropes.

At the time of the stoppage I was actually getting frustrated at Groves inability to land meaningful punches unless it was when Froch opened up himself. He was waiting too much and seemed to lack the mental sharpness to 'create' opportunities himself like he was earlier in the fight(even though the knockdown came from fighting fire with fire). So I think he was mentally and physically fatigued. Significantly so.

And that realisation is what led to him getting rocked in the ninth round. He conceded ground, waited for Froch again, and tried to punch with him and counter him, but Froch got the better of it. Simple as that. If the fight would have continued I'm in very little doubt Froch would have stopped him because Groves was abandoning the jab; his pride was getting in the way of pragmatism; and by that point the only way he could land meaningful power shots (to win rounds) was to engage at the same time as Froch.

    Recipe for a stoppage.

I posted this about a few weeks ago on the fight and got it pretty spot on (if I do say so myself!)

"Groves is not afraid to punch with fighters, and while it might be his undoing in this fight, it could be the reason he wins.

Froch struggles to land combinations on mobile targets, and often looks pretty amateurish when he's throwing these slow shots with his head in the air. If he does this against Groves then Georgie Boy could easily detonate some serious bombs on his chin. Froch's attacks are too contrived against the top movers, and if Groves just reels him in and gets him to open up, he can dip and land bombs. Then get on his bike at times and frustrate Carl and land rights to the body.

The problem will come late in the fight if Groves fades and gets sloppy. Then even Froch will begin to land enough, and the corkscrew uppercuts might find a home.

    Tough fight to call."

Rolled back by a clean punch not punches.

Froch landed one clean punch to him.

People talk like froch was having his way which is Bull.

Most of what Froch was landing was cuffing at best and at the time of the stoppage Groves was not getting his head rolled back.

Froch had been hurt earlier in the 9th worse than Groves was at that point.

Which is why Groves didn't go down, didn't stay on the ropes and completely had his wits about him and protested immediately. Because Froch really wasn't land a lot of flush shots with any substance behind them.

    Agree. Terrible Stoppage.

Foster was a joke I don't care what anyone says. Poor Reffing throughout.

    Great question.

I thought Groves was going to get stopped in that round, but, I still think he should have been given the benefit of the doubt for a little while longer.

    I just don't see this.

I mean obviously you can't rule it out but Froch's accuracy looked horrible and he was at least as knackered as groves despite him having his 2nd 2rd or 4th wind.

I feel groves could have seen out the round and come back stronger.

He was no-where near close enough to being stopped for people to call it a formaility. Which I do get you weren't saying.

you can do, I was there and have seen countless times since.

There is only one clean shot that rolls his head back on the ropes.

The rest were either cuffing or partially blocked.

I agree a good post and I don't think it will get savaged because it is fair and knowledgable.

I disagree with his prediction but thats all it is.

99% of people seem to agree it was a premature stoppage.

Think we wuld all agree it was a great fight.

Meanwhile Froch on the BBC says he will and I quote ''Knock him out again''.

Lol, can someone not have a word with him, he is really no helping himself.

    Deffo.

But Froch truly is having a PR nightmare at the moment as far as his fans are concerned.

He has always been a bit difficult to listen to sometimes and I say that as a big fan.

But he is talking some real crap at the moment.
