Yeah, it was beautiful. He spent up 200k on **** and when Pop died he left him 200k. Those two were special to one another.

Young Corbett was an excellent excellent fighter and this win ranks as one of the most impressive blowouts of an elite fighter. McLarnin, Canzoneri, and Ross were all time greats, each of them.

That's a very impressive string of fights there, and that represents McLarnin's peak IMO. Incidentally, the win over Singer is on film and shows McLarnin at his best. Singer was a very talented and highly regarded fighter, coming off a shocking 1st round KO of Mandell for the LW title, but McLarnin basically exposed him and probably ruined him.

His best weight seemed to have been around 140. I'd say he was one of the very best 140-pound fighters never to win the title, along with Henry Armstrong.

McLarnin supposedly toyed with the idea of coming back to take on Henry Armstrong, but thought better of it.

    Okay McGrain, my credibilty's gone!

I just dug out that video, and a dusty old video player, didn't know we still had one upstairs, but anyway, i only have rounds 1,2,7,11 and 15 of Ross-McLarnin 3, and even some of them aren't complete.

Forgive me, it's been about 7 years since i've watched that, probably longer.

Just a load of vids, I really don't know how much of each fight there is, but some of the ones i was quite happy to see were a Paret-Griffith one (think the second), a Giardello-Tiger. Laguna-Ortiz 1. A few Freddie Mills fights as well. I got some good one called the a-z of boxing, got loads of that kind of stuff, but this one's a bit out of the box, some Lionel Rose on it and other non-household names i'm sure.

It seems like most people thought the first fight was a clear and fair decision for Ross. The one judge who voted for McLarnin seems to have been considered the odd man out.

The second fight appears to have been considered a close fight that could've gone either way. It seems like most of the crowd liked McLarnin, but some sportswriters disagreed with the decision.

The third fight is actually considered the most controversial of the three, mainly because it was so unpopular with the crowd (which was largely pro-McLarnin). However, most sportswriters thought Ross won fair and square, and the film of the fight (albeit not entirely complete) seems to indicate Ross won clearly too. It was also the only fight won by a UD.

A push wouldn't you say, now?

I think Ross and Canzoneri can rank above him, I'd have him level with Canzoneri and Ross the level above.

The biggest thing with McLarnin is that there is a lot of circumstances to go with his wins, Labarba being raw, Villa at deaths door, Ross being the smaller man etc...

That downgrades it a bit as well.

I also feel there was clearly better fighters that were around in his time, Ross being one of them and he bested him in a series.

What do you guys make of Mclarnin's ability? I'm not too sure what to make of him, as I aint watched him in a while.
