I did abit of Judo in my youth for about 1 year and I have done some Muay Thai and boxing but only very minimally. I only found out about MMA until it was kind of too late in regards to my age (I feel)
I just turned 19 btw, I take it's too late to begin training in MMA and wanting to compete?(I'm probably sounding like a complete walt right now )

What do you think is the optimal time to begin training? 13, 14? Younger?

You are by no means to old to hope do do pro mma, alot of fighters have no more than 2-3 years of training.

I have no crazy hopes or anything
I don't expect to be a champion or fight in a major org, just a few fights on the side to say I did it.

Not really. Only my persistant trolling (albeit justified) of Fedor topics, I feel outside of that topic I conduct myself cordially on these boards with a civil attitude.
Certainly far better than many grown 'men' on here.

I would have guessed under 20 as well. You are not to old to train and see how far you can go.

****, you can start anytime. Randy Couture didn't start training MMA until he was in his 30's.

You could do an amature fight in 18 months or so.
You could go all the way to the UFC in 5 if you dedicated yourself.
There have been guys in the UFC with less than three years training.
I'm 28 and training now. When I start beating or at least giving problems to the guys in my gym who compete than I will fight amature.

I will do smokers in a few months. Because even if the most I ever did was a smoker, I still fought in a cage full contact against another trained fighter, and that is enough for me.

Well according to the geniouses in the GSP thread it is already too late. You see there are guys out there that have been doing it for years and years. they can do things with their eyes closed by now. I don't care if you are bigger, stronger, faster, quicker, smarter, tougher and more motivated now......you can never compete with their experience at this point. :patsch Just give it up man, you'll never win. :deal

i dont think its ever too late if you find what you want to do =)

take some mma classes or just take muay thai and bjj(if you dont have enough money then i would just suggest bjj or another grappling art unless of course you want to be a striker)

i think if you want it enough just train for 6 months then look for a fight and train until the fight

good luck to you and your future mma fights

ps. i really thought you were only 14

A LOT of great boxers and MMA fighters didn't start until their 20s.
