Give me: 2013 The Rematch Roy Jones vs. James Toney II ...as long as it's the last time both ever lace them up.
Well if that's the case any fighter can claim that everything past their first loss was past their best and no longer hurts their legacy. All victories would be bonuses then... Yay! Everybody's undefeated! I agree to an extent, but by no means to your extreme.
Legacy should be defined by achievements, skills and great fights they were in not by their losses. When fighter is past his best I dont see why loss should damage his achievements in his prime.
Safe from what? He does has impressive reign of domination. Loss of course could ruin his changes to improve his legacy
This. Toney was completely out of shape against Browne, but he showed he still has the skills and I actually believe that he hurt Browne more than Browe hurt him. If he drops 20-30 pounds he would have KO'D this guy.
I understand that he has debts to pay, but there comes a point where he needs to be protected from himself. He might end up broke, but at least he'll be able to tie his own shoelaces. His team claim he is passing the required medical tests, but he's clearly already brain damaged.
:goodThis!!:good There is no denying that James Toney was a great fighter but its long gone now. He isn't dedicated to the sport to come in shape...so to me he already being brain damaged should be saved from himself. I keep hoping someone will KO him brutally and hope then that he finally accepts its gone and retires. But part of me feels he'd still make some excuse and carry on. His brain damage isn't gonna get any better...but there's a high chance with many more punchest to his head that it will get worse. So I say protect fighters like him (and Holyfied etc) from themselves. When its over and the world can clearly see what they can't (or won't) then some governing bodies should refuse them a licence on the grounds that they need protecting from further damage. Boxing is a dangerous sport...if you can't really do the training to the point where your body is in good shape then your dedication is in question. If $$$ is the only thing that keeps you fighting then better to be poor and healthy and alive than brain damage and richer. Your health is more important than money. I don't care what you say. Most intelligent fighters have the good sense to call it a day when the warning signs start showing. When they're getting beat by people that shouldn't even be sharing a ring with them...and they wise up and hang 'em up. Tyson...Lewis..Holmes etc - most realise after a few tough fights or losses that shouldn't have happend that times up! Father time waits for no man.
^This. And if for some reason he fights again, hire someone besides the Shoney Bear to be his strength & conditioning coach.
No. James needs to retire. He may still have some elusive defensive moves but his skill level has deterioated significantly. Speed and reflexes are not there anymore.
I agree to a certain extent. It depends on his fitness level. I believe that a 250 pound Toney should not be granted a license anymore to fight. At 230 pounds or below, the commission may grant him a license but only if he passes all tests.
No even if he weighs ripped 220lbs he shouldn't be licensed. Have you seen his last fights? He is brain damaged and just done whoever gives him a license is just a straight up *******
