Extract from "Peter Maher, The Irish Champion" , Page 87-Author Matt Donnellon!

Corbett retires, declares Maher new champion.

The crowd invaded the ring and it was to be fifteen minuets
before Maher would manage to leave. Corbett, from his box, had
smiled through the affair despite the fact that his protégé was on
the wrong side of one of the worst hammering ever administered
in the ring. Now he bounded between the ropes where Peter
offered to give him the same medicine as his sparring partner, if
he ever dared to cross gloves with him. Corbett had a different
    agenda.
He shook Maher's hand and declared; “You are the champion of
the world. Any title which I may hold I confer on you. My
withdrawal from the prize ring is final. I regard you as a worthy
    man to hold the championship.”
