At the end of the day they are just human i guess. Given the way mental health and the like has come to be viewed in recent years one could only imagine (or not...) the pressures these guys are under in a sport where you are trying to beat your opponent into submission and vice versa.

Agree. Though “unconditional” is a unique quality we admire there are a million ways to intellectually rationalise yourself out of absorbing an unnecessary beating. And these days, that rationale is more at the forefront than it was in the past. As we move forward in time, it seems less likely that we’ll ever again see fighters like Ali and Frazier leaving it all in the ring, as they did in Manila - and, in hindsight, many agree that was one fight too many for Ali anyway.

Yes as described in the Hauser biography.
I would favor even that Ali to have been able to beat the champ.
    Based in part on styles.

But I do not agree any version of Liston beats any Bugner that shows up.
Speed & evasiveness means a great deal against a much slower, older man.

Which version of Joe Bugner are we calling in on this one?

If it’s the “Aussie” Joe Bugner version, well, DUH, that version was unbeatable - at least until it wasn’t.

He did feast on a few ex champs who were well past their salad days. An old Liston would not be at all out of place on “Aussie” Joe’s menu.

I’ve watched Ali-Liston I many times. Maybe he had a shoulder issue, maybe not. But there’s absolutely nothing that looks like he couldn’t throw a punch or keep fighting. He quit because he was getting outclassed and probably on the way to being worn down and taken out.

This isn’t one of those things where a guy can’t lift his arm or use it at all.

Aussie Joe would put another shrimp on the barbie with his right hand while jabbing his way to victory over Sonny with his left.

Whoever came up with the saying “Everything in Australia can kill you” was talking about Aussie Joe.

He didnt maybe have a shoulder issue .. He had one ... see the difference ... And thats what he is explaining to you that you so easily dismissed ... Your favorite fighter of all time Willie Pep injured his shoulder and couldn't continue .... Is he a quitter ?? I see you took the time to bash your 2nd favorite fighter in the world LaMotta again for the umpteenth time in an off topic comment..... and if Tim comes back and says ya Pinklon remembers the guy who couldn't last a round and quit .. then you are the a quitter too !!! See how it works? Boxing is a brutal sport .. injuries happen .. new ones, aggravating old ones .. maybe he had one , maybe he didnt ? didnt look like it hurt? who the **** are you to judge? other than the guy who couldn't last a round

You sure seem to take a lot of notes of my postings. You seem rather obsessed with me. I know I’m naturally charming but damn man.

    I’ll indulge you:

    1) I’m not convinced Sonny had a major shoulder problem. You can get a doctor to say whatever you need if you find the right doctor (or maybe someone slips him some cash). Happens all the time. For those who choose to believe it, I have no problem with that … but I’m skeptical.

And nice how you missed my point — what happened between the round he boxed and the minute rest that made him quit? Are you saying he was unable to throw a punch anymore? I’ve seen guys with two broken hands win fights, Tyrell Biggs with a broken collarbone … and countless others with major injuries keep trying whether they won or not.

Bottom line: Sonny could have kept fighting but chose not to. We have a word for that: quit.

    2) Where do you get the idea that Willie Pep is my favorite fighter? Sandy Saddler is one of my all-time faves and, yes, he made Willie quit. Pep was great — heck, beyond great — but he also quit. That’s not why he’s not my favorite fighter, but it’s a fact.

    3) Where did I bring up LaMotta, lol?

    4) Pinklon and I were only going to box one round to begin with. I didn’t quit. He had a fight the next day and just wanted to loosen up with a light round of sparring. He could have turned up the heat and taken me out if he had chosen to do so — of this I have no doubt — but he wasn’t there to do that. It was a great experience that I cherish, even though my jaw was sore for like six weeks, haha.

By the way, I thought you had me on ignore. Just couldn’t resist, I see. Again, my natural charm. It’s as much a curse as a blessing.

Perhaps a change of username would suit you. Instead of @surfinghb, how about @batshitcrazyhb?

I don’t know what everyone else was reading but it sounds like Bugner just stuck and moved and made Sonny quit out of frustration.

Ahh, forgot I mentioned that in my philosophical musing on the different ways people react to quitters.

You apparently are in the category of those who glorify them.

If someone has a debilitating injury, one which they cannot continue to fight with after trying to do so, that’s a bit different than Sonny quitting on his stool when he can clearly still throw punches.

I know Sandy made Willie quit TWICE, so yeah maybe one time he had a legit injury. (That’s in addition to Saddler knocking him cold in their first fight.)

I have no idea what your point is other than you have some kind of hard-on for me, but please continue to take notes on my posts and drop in whenever you feel like to post them.

    SMFH.

It's reality, not an agenda, but the fans of the runners/dancers (Ali, SRL) can't accept that.

    Take what? Dish out what?

Why don’t you give me a list of boxers that you take offense at me criticizing so I know when I’m going to upset you.

    You’re a strange one.
