First let me just say i will respect any man for the heart he shows in the ring. Willing to lay it on the line to get the win, or to give the fans an entertaining night is always a wonder to see.

However, I feel sometimes it can cause more bad then good. Quitting is often looked at as such a negativity in boxing and those that do quit immediately receive the wrath of so many keyboard warriors, analysts, and writers.

But can you really hate on a man for surrendering when there just is no point in them taking any more abuse?

    A few examples

Margarito vs Cotto: Cotto fought a brave fight and was in it to win it for as long as he lasted. Those last few rounds against Margo tho were brutal to watch and the momentum had completely shifted. He knew in his heart that there was simply no more he could give. I cant knock the guy.

Pac vs Morales III: Morales is a warrior through and through and has given us more highlights in a couple fights then many other fighters can produce in a career. While I have no doubt he could have gotten up and continued from the last knockdown he suffered, what was the point really? Standing there getting your head bludgeoned in when you kno you have no chance whatsover is just stupid (im looking at you Margarito's corner).

I could list a ton more but im curious what you all think. Is quitting ever acceptable? Should a fighter always go out on his shield? Any times you felt that a fighter should have quit but didnt, or on the flip side, quit when he still had a legit chance at the win? Curious to see what others feel on this controversial issue in boxing.

Obviously it is the right thing to do under certain circumstances.

Gerald McClellan, it was revealed told his cornermen that by Rd 2, he could not comprehend their instructions--from the rabbit punches from Benn. You can also see that he cannot keep his mouthpiece in his mouth soon afer that too.

He or his cornermen or someone should have stopped it. By the time, late in the fight, he took a knee and didn't get up by 10, it was too late, and he barely survived, but was comatose for some time, and is blind and partially deaf and in poor shape.

Old Japanese proverb: "Better to lose face than head."

I have no problem with a boxer packing it in when he knows he can't win and/or thinks there is something seriously wrong with his body. That's not a game in there, and it's not worth your life. I've been to a couple of fights where a boxer ended up dying, and I don't like the feeling I get from it. Almost enough to make you quit following the sport when someone dies right in front of you.

I had just this conversation with Sechew Powell on facebook. He was outraged at the very thought of quitting in a fight, got pissed off just talking about it. That's why it's important for a corner to look out for their fighter, because a lot of them just won't give it up until it's too late.

Everyone needs to see the Docu, "Ring of Fire" to see what happens when a ref and cornermen don't stop a fight properly. In that case, the fighter was unconscious and basically propped up for some 20-25 unanswered blows.

Something to consider: even in "real war", Geneva convention laws call for not killing a hopeless, injured enemy combatant. Seems like if a boxer is supposed to keep punching (until a ref says to stop) after his opponent is unconcsious and maybe already brain-dead, boxing under certain circumstances may be more cruel than war?

    Just something to ponder...

No title and no money is worth putting your life (or your limbs, or your eye sight) on the line for it. Some guys posting those ridiculous "he quit like a coward" threads should be ashamed of themselves.

    Briggs vs Vitali

Great display of heart and will by Briggs, but he took way too much punishment that night.

Well that youtube summarizes things, and it loses the impact of the whole film. But still good of you to post, Lefthook.

Did you see the whole film?

I think most proper boxing fans know when enough is enough and when a guy is just pussying out. I haven't seen many criticise Cotto for quitting against Margarito and if they are they need a slap.

Devon Alexander and people who quit like that are the ones who understandably get the abuse and rightly so in my opinion.

    Devon obviously pussed out.
I've seen many criticize Cotto--unfairly, as we now know what he might have been facing.
