In my opinion, 160 isn't ideal for him. He can make weight, but it's clear there's no threat to him at 160.
Why is Ward a big fight? That Guy is so boring to watch.. Every single round from Golovkin is more entertaining then the whole thing what Ward calls "his whole career".. :deal
Threats always come along. Some new guy always takes the boxing world by storm. Just a couple of years ago, everyone thought LHW was dead. But then came Stevenson and Kovalev. I don't see the harm in establishing himself at 160 and making everyone come to him. The purses will continue to grow and that means more fighters will be willing to fight him.
People will get tired of his mismatches at 160. 'Subtle skills' is not what casuals pick up. Kovalev is more fan friendly fighter and showman.
cottos a joke at 160, peter quillen would get ko'd, martinez is handicapped, sam soliman might be interesting, felix sturm just lost to soliman, marco rubio & martin murray might be interesting...aside from that why should ggg stay at 160? not one of those fights are a big money fight or worthy of ppv, maybe quillen on an undercard of a ppv. the real tests and bread winners for ggg would be at a catchweight or up or down a division. it seems that the people calling for him to stay at 160 for as long as it takes to clean out the division just want him to remain undefeated, but there are no REAL tests at 160. i say he takes the next year or two fighting the few legitimate threats at 160 and a few catchweights before reevaluating his career. i voted for him to move up at 35.
knocking out Froch would catapult him to #1 p4p and time for a bout against Froch is running out. most believe he would annihilate all the middleweights anyway.
When he's past his prime and doesn't have much left, cash out against a star. Sort of what Sergio did against Cotto.
No one at 160 worth fighting and the ones who are like Cotto and Quillen won't fight him.:deal He should move up.
It doesn't make sense until he's won the middleweight championship or its a PPV fight in a one-off scenario, which would increase his chances of getting the middleweight championship shot. If he moves up now and loses on a regular network fight, you'd better believe people will hold the "unfinished business" at 160 against him.
I think if hes comfortable at MW he should just stay there and dominate. Be like Hopkins and Hagler. staying in one division and dominating as long as you fight everyone is as impressive as moving up in weight specially since most fighters that move up in weight go after a paper title
He seems to be a small MW in contrast to previous Champions who moved up past 160. Abraham the only one comparable in height but he was very stocky. GGG is only listed at 5'10.5" 70" Previous MWs who made the move: Pavlik 6'2" 75" Taylor 6'1" 74" Hopkins 6'1" 75" Chavez Jr 6'1" 73" Jones JR 5'11" 74" Abraham 5'9" 72" Current top Super MWs: Ward 6'0" 71" Froch 6"1" 75" Kessler 6'1" 74" GGG is even a bit smaller than these famous career MWs: Hagler 5'9" 75" Monzon 5'11.5" 76"
He needs to unify some of the belts at 160. He can make himself.a superstar with the right fights. That is when he should move up, once he's taken care of business at MW.
