Had he retired after ruiz he'd have had the stain of not beating enough quality fighters in his division.

i think he should've called it a day after showing heart to outbox tarver.

After the Tarver fight he should have known that something was wrong.......he ad a tough fight against someone he would have destroyed 6 months prior...if anyone thinks Tarver would have beaten an earlier version of roy then you need to go back to 101

Tarver's style would always give him trouble even Roy admitted that, but i agree Roy should have retired after the first Tarver fight.

After Ruiz, had he retired then I dont think people would be questioning his legacy as much as they do now.

In retrospect, I'd have to say after Ruiz.

I think it would have been a much better idea to stay at Heavyweight for 2 or 3 fights. The long-rumoured fight against Tyson would have been perfect at that time. Holyfield and Byrd are the others I would have liked to see him against.

It was the perfect time to get Tyson and Holyfield in the ring - a win over those guys would have cemented his legacy, regardless of how past-it they were. Byrd was close to his prime - a win over him would have impressed the hardcore fans - and I think he would've beaten Byrd. I don't see Byrd beating a guy quicker than him, not to mention more skilled.

If he had any sense, which few fighters do..that is the sense to leave the sport financially secure and not motivated by the lure of greed...Roy should have retired right after the Ruiz fight..in the same sense that Joe Frazier should have retired right after the FOTC...at a high..ideally the time for a fighter to back down.

After Ruiz would have been the ideal time.

After Tarver 2 would have been the logical time.

After Johnson would have been the prudent time.

i agree, at any point in his career tarver's counter punching style would've posed problems. in the first fight he had to dig deep, and he did that, but then, with noothing left to prove, he carried on an potentially damaged his legacy

**** i voted after Taver1 but i meant after Ruiz. Retiring after Tarver 1 would've left a sour taste in alot of people's mouth kind of like Lewis after VK

I think he should not have retired just because he lost his first couple of fights. Every fighter loses, even Ray Robinson lost a few fights. Roy jones Jr is not the fighter he once was, his legs are completely gone and they will never come back. He just cannot get in and out without getting hit on the way out. Tarver knocked him out because he had no legs to jump in and out. And his fight against Johnson was a complete embarrassment. Roy Jones Jr. should fight his last fight against whomever he chooses, Green, Johnson, Tarver or Hopkins. These are the only fights I want to see him in, I don't want to see him in with anyone young like Dawson. I do think he has enough left to beat fighters his own age, he has a strong chance at beating Johnson and he looks like he has enough left to beat Hopkins. Whether or not he can beat Green depends on whether or not he can take a punch.

Johnson and Hopkins don't punch hard enough to knock him out easily, so if they don't knock him out they can't outbox him. He should take fights with fighters who cannot knock him out, only then can he fight on. He should never again fight a puncher. If Edison Miranda moves up in weight, he shouldn't fight him. He shouldn't go to Heavyweight to fight James Toney either. Roy Jones Jr does not have a style that adapts to the higher weights. He probably was always weak to power punches but never fought at a high enough weight for this to be seen. Ruiz does have a punch but that was a Roy Jones Jr at the absolute peak of his abilities. That Roy Jones Jr was impossible to hit at any weight and that Roy Jones Jr does not exist anymore.

Roy Jones is 40 years old, he is in the twilight of his career and 2010 should be the year Roy Jones Jr retires whether he wins a title or gets knocked out again.

After Johnson. He found out his jaw was glass and now that he didn't have the same reflexes it was a matter of time before it got shattered again.
