Bumped this old post as I have often felt a loss can affect certain fighters.
Here below are some parts of the original post.

    Another part below
Groves didnt go after Froch in the same way he did first time, and stayed away a bit more. This time Froch looked ahead to me before the stoppage.

Could what I said have been right with certain fighters?

Groves was winning until he fell for a stupid feint

Dropped his hands and got hit clean

    Weak chin,

    BUT TO HIS CREDIT

    he got up

I remember that, he didn't get ktfo he got back up

Not an early ref stoppage because he looked out

I dont know what the official cards read, but I had Froch a round up at the time with Groves having won round 7 and winning round 8 before the finishing shot.
Its a big difference to how I had it after 8 rounds first time around and Groves didnt go after Froch the same way

After J Toney lost his 0 to Jones, he also lost his very next fight to a novice.
do you think he would have lost that fight, had he not been coming off a loss to Jones?

Pavlik is a prime example. He completly lost it after losing to Hopkins. I don't think I have ever seen a fighter take a loss that badly.

I would say it's often to do with the way they get beat.

I actually think Groves won't be too affected mentally because he probably still thinks he can beat the likes of Froch.

Bute knew he couldn't beat Froch in a week of Sunday's which shattered him emotionally. Hopkins has taken the 0's of guys like Pavlik and Cloud and left them with little illusion they are simply not that good. When Calzaghe mastefully took apart Lacy- sure Jeff took a beating but the real scars that didn't heal was the mental ones.

Another recent example seems to be Donaire (while it wasn't technically his 0) he doesn't look like he will ever recover from Rigondeaux.

I think it especially effects them when they are schooled or given a beat down by someone they are confident of beating.

Froch is a fighter who didnt let a loss affect him and actually seemed to come back harder, like a loss gave him a needed kick

This doesn't really apply to many of the ATG's or HOF'ers if you think about it. I guess that's what makes them ATG's or HOF'ers, though.

All of them either suffered defeats early in their career without effect (Hagler, Monzon, J. Johnson, Ezzard, Moore) or suffered one in or near their prime and "recovered" quite well (Louis, Leonard, Ali, C. Ortiz, Robinson).

Of course nowadays is a little different and I think that has to do with activity brought on by promoters and their intent to build up and safely milk what they know they can get from certain fighters.

Yep. I think Froch didn't let it affect him as much because the loss to Kessler was close and Froch either fought he won or would win without circumstances such as the ash cloud that messed up his traveling plans.

basically if you are a bit weak in character then a loss of a zero is going to affect you. Its simply being weak to think a loss is a problem, and you weren't true champion matieral anyway if you succumb to such a stupid thought. A bad day at the office is all it amounts to, and that really doesn't bother anyone with a bit of character and grit.

So if you have tough character qualities then this wont happen to you, guys who are good athletes who need a tough personality just to get up and train each morning of each week, it makes diddly squat...or at the very least it might effect you for a short while later. If its affecting you longer then theres probably something more physcological wrong with you that you should deal with...Floyd Pattersons manic-like depression after Liston killed him springs to mind.
