http://www.thesweetscience.com/news/articles/3843-when-ted-jamieson-fought-harry-greb Anyone know anything about this? Greb, getting knocked down or possibly out by a novice, newspapers are the best thing to look at ovbiously but since theres othere more experienced on Greb here, I was hoping they could fill me in. Any explanation to it, or does Jamieson's claim hold water, did he knock out Harry Greb?
Its bull****. Greb got knocked down. He got up and beat Jamieson. The ringside reports from Grand Rapids voted for Greb. An AP wire report (which could have come from anywhere including Jamiesons manager) called the fight a draw.
btw klompton, ive pretty much read all I can find on Greb, I need something new- hows the book coming along?
Luckily we have a brief film of Ted Jamieson fighting Gene Tunney in the late 1910's. Jamieson was no bum, but he did not find much success in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions of his times aside from decking Greb.
I do believe the Jamieson fight interrupted Grebs honeymoon, if not honeymoon, vacation with wifey. Im sure she was with him during his Benton Harbor Dempsey sparring-Wiggins fight the next week. The rematch with Jamierson was a viscous slaughter.
Greb was married in early 1919 so he wouldnt have been on his honeymoon when he fought Jamieson. I also dont think Mildred was along with him at Benton Harbor because she was very pregnant at the time. She likely would have been staying close to home. Id have to check my reports though to see if she was mentioned as being with Harry during this time.
I went back and check my own writings, I still need to check the papers. Greb was not down for a long count. He was knocked down, his head cleared before a count had even started and he was up by four. He spent that round and the early part of the next round warding off Jamieson's rush and then took over. Neither the Grand Rapids Press or Herald mention any controversy. The Herald called the fight a draw. The Press called it a win for Greb. Greb took the fight one days notice and the fight had to be postponed one day just to allow Greb time to arrive on site. He subbed for Chuck Wiggins who was unable to fight due to injuries suffered to his nose and eyes in a bout with Greb a week earlier. Greb took the contest on such short notice because he was offered the largest guarantee in Grand Rapids history. I made no mention of Mildred being there but Greb had taken a lengthy automobile trip with Mildred and Dorothy throughout the East coast in early August.
Mildred was in Benton Harbor arriving by auto with Harry only a matter of days after fighting Jamieson in nearby Grand Rapids. Ed Shave wrote at length about it in the Saint Paul Daily News.
