There have been times in history when the reigning champion has been so weak or so far thrown off his game that the first top contender to get him in the ring would virtualy have been gifted the title.

I have often thought for example that when Evander Holyfield beat James Douglas it had basicaly been a lottery as to who would get Douglas that night.

Any more examples you guys can think of?

I don't like to disrespect any fighters, never mind champions, but i probably do see it that way.

Is this restricted to linear champs?

    Freddie "Red" Cochrane.

I've read that the reason Robinson wasn't given a shot was because the fight would have been viewed as a mismatch (in Robinson's favour). No one was interested in it.

Eventually Marty Servo was given the chance when the Second World War was over and Servo knocked Cochrane out in 4 rounds. Before that Cochrane had actually given Rocky Graziano a hard time in two bouts, losing in the 10th and final round both times.

Not necesarily, though lineal examples are more interesting.

I would say that which ever of Joe Louis and Max Schmeling got him in the ring first was basicaly signing a contract to be the next champion.

Beyond that the rankings wern't so stacked over the crucial period. He probably could have taken Barlund or another top contender.

    1935 Jim Braddock, Champion
    1. Joe Louis
    2. Max Schmeling
    3. Primo Carnera
    4. Charley Retzlaff
    5. Tommy Loughran
    6. Eddie Mader
    7. Hank Hankinson
    8. Ray Impelletiere
    9. Al Ettore
    10. Ford Smith

    1936 Jim Braddock, Champion
    1. Max Schmeling
    2. Joe Louis
    3. Gunnar Barlund
    4. Jack Trammell
    5. Maxie Rosenbloom
    6. Ray Impelletiere
    7. Leroy Haynes
    8. Sonny Boy Walker
    9. Al Ettore
    10. Arturo Godoy

Michael Bentt after taking out Tommy Morrison, was only the WBO though.

Bärlund would've become the champ.

Braddock really wasn't that bad but I doubt he could have beaten either Schmeling or Louis. Louis was lucky to get the shot despite losing to Max but in the first round it seemed that Braddock could actually pull it off. He put in a very determined effort I thought.

Briggs when he "defeated" Old Foreman for the linear HW title, even though he actually put up a good effort against Lennox Lewis
