When thinking about an all-time ranking for Oscar De La Hoya...

I understand what it means. It's a lame term invented by internet posters to put a set in stone ranking system into play. I personally don't play into that. I'll dabble in the rankings game every now and then, but only for fun. I don't even take my own rankings seriously, much less anyone else's. There are far too many variables to consider.

I base my judgement of a fighter mainly on watching his fights and gauging his abilities. Obviously the quality of opposition comes into play when doing so. With fighters there is little to no film of, I base my judgement on contemporary reports and accounts of their careers.

It all comes down to your assertion of "great" and what qualifies. De La Hoya simply doesn't stack up to a plethora of other fighters throughout history, in my opinion. On film or otherwise. Excellent fighter at his best, just not my cup of tea.

 

True but these guys were either very well respected or Chamions at the time Oscar fought them

I've said it once, and I will say it again. ODLH is one of the most overrated boxers of the last 10-15 years.

Take a look at his "loss" against Trinidad. He may not have lost that fight straight up, but I sure as hell don't think he won that fight. I actually scored that fight a draw. People act as if ODLH had Tito hurt throughout the first six to seven rounds. All I saw from ODLH throughout the first six rounds was maybe two to three EFFECTIVE combos total. Everything else was either flailing punches that did little to no damage. His jab was o.k. but it wasn't dominating. Anyhow, neither fighter, IMO, separated themselves from each other in that fight. I know a lot of people were disappointed because it was supposed to be a "Super" fight. It turned out to be a major dud.

I won't comment on the ODLH vs Mosley II fight since it has been a long time since I last saw it and I didn't particularly care for it the first time.

Anyhow, back to the point I was trying to make. ODLH made his reputation by fighting a lot of smaller, past their prime fighters in the early part of his career. Some were decent champs (Genaro Hernandez comes to mind), but they were not great champs. The advantages ODLH had over Hernandez were that he was the naturally bigger man, had youth on his side, plus speed; however, his technique was the greatest.

When ODLH finally started fighting boxers his age, size, and weight, the spectacular KO's stopped and the losses came.

He ducked good fighters in Forrest, Jose Luis Lopez, Wright, Tyzsu, Philips, Randall, and he never pushed to get rematches. Well unless you want to count the ancient Chavez as a good rematch.

He never dominated a big fight that he was in, and actually never won a big fight without some type of controversy following it.

One thing I won't argue is that he is the most successful PPV star of my time, but I am also glad to say that I never paid for one of his PPV's.

Anyhow, that is is my two cents on ODLH.

 

Oscar fought the who's who of the 90's. Let's not get into him ducking fighters. :verysad

 

All those fights were "Low-risk and High-reward" for ODLH.

 

So did Camacho yet no one is saying he is one of the greatest. :good

Say whatever you like about Oscar's ATG status, but he fought the best fighters of his generation. It's unfair to say he ducked opponents.

 

All were still good fighters at the time. Although ill give you Paez he was a little past it. These were the best available and for 23 fights thats still a good list. The only one they passed up was Azumah but Oscar only had like 12 fights at the time. Oscar was only a fw a year before the olympics and still growing so at the time he was in his right division. Plus he moved up to fight Molna,Gonzalez and Chavez. When other fighters do it they are good wins but for Oscar he is picking on the little guys:-( You cant name to many fighters with a list of victims like that after only 23 fights.

 

the only thing I consider is Oscar getting his ass whipped by every elite he has ever fought.
