When to quit - Roy Jones- did he always lack Recoup

His best was more like 15 or 16 years ago, though its 8 or 9 since he was a plausible top level fighter (though no one mentioned this to him), puts into perspective what a farce it is.

The man needs to retire, its cruel on his family and himself.

 

I didnt watch the fight (only the last round on youtube) but it was quite clear that Jones collapsed from exhaustion, more than solid punching. He looked in the awful shape and seemed to barely be able to hold his head up, much less his arms during that last round. If he is going to fight on, surely he should arrange to shorten the period of fights.

 

Aside from a drained Toney and a fading Hill, Roy Jones feasted on a buncha' ham and eggers in the 1990s..... For such a talent, he never really broke solid ground with PPV during his peak yrs.... That's a fact, Jack...

Just a weakness in their game. It usually is with those "on top" fighters anyway. They sure look devastating when things are going their way. What's interesting is when things are not going their way, they don't lose 10% effectiveness, they seem to drop their effectiveness 50% or more. They look like a different fighter in there.

Lots of times those on top guys need or have to have home cooking to be at their best. For some reason, that characteristic usually does not lend itself to being a road warrior either. They have to have that home cooking to be 100% and only then are they razor sharp. Why is that? What's interesting is how far from 100% they look when the shoe is on the other foot & just never seem to be razor sharp and you can usually see it during the prefight intro's. Such a wide pendulum swing from the version of the on top guy that simply looks devastating.

Its really hurt to watch him. I ****in hope vs Lebedev is going to be last fight.

 

I was very saddened to see Jones in this fight. Really horrible. I dont know how he could possibly even want to get in the ring after getting knocked so many times, especially moving to cruiser.
I saw the weigh in, I saw the condition of Jones. He must need the money badly, because he didnt even look like he trained for the fight.

I think Jones always had a poor chin. Guys with his makeup usually dont have good chins. Just shows you how difficult the guy was to hit cleanly in his prime. Now hes a walking corpse, and I think its pretty clear, hes just trying to get some paydays, but hes taking some serious risks with his health.

 

I don't think he always had a poor chin, necessarily, but I do think this goes back to his phenomenal physical talents. His reflexes and speed were so great, as was his confidence and utter lack of tension in the ring, that he was never suprised by shots, and if he was ever hurt badly in his prime(He well could have been), he conned his way out of it easily and the other guy couldn't get him again to puncture that.

He may have never been iron jawed, but a peak Roy is one of the harder fighters in the history of our sport to stop for that reason. It'd be near impossible to clip him with something he didn't pick up on, partially block, or roll with, and if you did and he was still able to stand and move, good luck hitting him again. It'd take a truly great fighter with atleast 8/10 power to do it.

The biggest thing that tells me how badly faded Jones in physically is how tense he fights now. The relaxation is gone, the tension in his back and arms is actually visible. He's nervous, tight, and frightened in the ring. He was NEVER like that before Johnson and Tarver knocked him out. As a matter of fact, I first started noticing it in round 7 of Calzaghe. He just suddenly look like he lost a big part of his self-belief in there. Lebedev tried to box him too much, at any rate; Everytime the big Russian got violent, Jones got tossed about like a child. The 10th was only the second round Denis looked like he was actually trying to hurt Jones and not just outwork him. It was inevitable that Roy was getting clubbed again. If he carries on his boxing career, it should be against the Omar Sheika's and Jeff Lacy's of the world: Guys without the speed or the skill to make him uncomfy. Top 5 cruiserweights who can punch are a BAD matchmaking call.

nothing can be said for certain except he was too fast, too good to be hit and hurt in his prime.

these guys wouldn't have come close to beating him in his prime.

 

Not really....because at least Joe Louis could still beat all the younger contenders in the division who were not great fighters, and worked himself back up to a # 2 ranking in the world. Jones is so shot he cannot beat any of the young contenders in the world, and cannot get himself back into a top 10 ranking.
